Water Damage Diagnosis On This Lexus LS430 equals Multi Thousand Dollar Repairs!

Water Damage Diagnosis On This Lexus LS430 equals Multi Thousand Dollar Repairs!

This beautiful 2004 Lexus LS430 Has had some Water Damage which thankfully didn’t cause major issues, but small ones that would cost this owner multiple thousand dollars to fix the single issue that stems from it.

Proper diagnosis is key in finding issues without wasting the customers time or money. A Key aspect of car diagnosis is understanding how the system works first. If you don’t know how it works, how can you fix it.

Folks spending additional time in diagnosis is important. Some folks diagnosis approach is what part should they replace first. That is incorrect and usually ends up with large repair bills and the concern is not fixed.

John Schuler says:

Yep. Copper Sulfate (aka "The Green Crusty's" (*)… is an INSULATOR!
(*) Term used by Eric O. @ South Main Auto)

Your video reminds us that "Someone" got things RIGHT … when air-bag connectors were mandated to be gold-plated. Imagine if you were driving on a long trip (or parked under an over-flowing gutter during you one-night stay at the hotel, in a rain storm … and your "collision" circuits began failing randomly … as they got "damp"! … complete disaster.!

Your point of poor body work is well made, AMD.
As for that "open and wet" trunk, NO manufacturer is interested in spending perhaps $100 per vehicle to use only "aircraft-quality" (aka gold-plated / better seals) connectors for more than just "air-bags". As a field engineer working on radios in aircraft for over ten (10) years … I saw ZERO problems with Canon Connectors. (i.e. Gold plating and twist-lock rings)

BTW: Aircraft use 48 Volts … the highest voltage still safe if grabbed by a well-grounded worker. At 48 Volts, the loss of 500 milli-volts due to a bad ground is NOT a deal-breaker. But in a 5 volt chip circuit … it is often a disaster!

A bit different from my 20+ years of repairing my own (Detroit) cars; perhaps 80% of all failures were poor grounds or failed sensors and / or connectors. In most cases the problem was a poor (cheap) choice of materials and / or cheap assembly methods at day one.

e.g. A common problem is a ground wire held by a self-tapping screw into a thin body panel. (The cause of many failures on my old '92 Detroit minivan before its demise). One real-world connector example: 3 shops "fixed" the cruise control @ 30K miles … then it would fail again.

Later when I began doing much of my own work, I found the source Problem! Cheap/Corroded pin inside a connector in the engine compartment. Example Symptom: Cruise control would "drop out" over rough pavement or at a bump, etc.) Combination of bad factory crimp plus corrosion inside the connector inside a dry, pristine-looking, wrapped wiring harness.

Re: GROUNDS: Today, my Toyota / Lexus typically uses "welded nuts" on a body panel with a "Bolt" torqued well at assembly time. But even so … with 1 or more "smooth" washers on wires) at 10+ years now, I had to go thru it and add lock washers with aggressive teeth … and then re-torque things .. to "clean up" some "Electrical Gremlins" / aka intermittent electrical / instrument panel display / radio / etc. problems.

Throw in our modern CAN busses with 5-Volt logic modules … Whoa! Job security for people like you and Eric O at South Main Auto … and Ivan at Pine Hollow Diagnostics.

Tip: Much can be resolved with a shot or two of WD-40 or DeOxit on (both sides of) suspect connectors.

I can live without that button.
I'd just work on the purchase price a bit more.

Are the receiver and oscillator coded to the key, ECU, etc…any way associated with the VIN of the car? Could salvage parts get installed for under $50-100 from a DIY junkyard by the customer to fix this problem after cleaning the connector with Deoxit or equivalent chemical to fight the corrosion and improve the contacts?

I miss the big, comfortable, powerful, but SIMPLE and inexpensive cars of the 60s. Dealers love cars filled with unnecessary gadgets. They can charge you more when you buy the car and then they charge you more to maintain it.

Had to replace my radio receiver due to moisture. My 02 LS had the drain plug out and water was getting in. That's all it was.

James W says:

I had to buy a truck a few months back. I have a friend that owns a body shop and even looking at trucks with less than 25K on them it took three before he was satisfied the one we were looking at had not been in an accident. He said with modern vehicles even a minor impact can lead to major issues down the road. I also found out, through a guy at one of the dealers, that most major lease companies do in-house work so they don't have to report it damage. That's why even vehicles that have had fairly significant damage won't show on reports.

owner has lots of $$$, deserves what he gets for buying "convenience" of a dubious nature. I would charge Mr Moneybags $4k for assisting his "convenience". I love it when people throw money out on stupid features. LOL A fool and his money!!!
