On March 20, 2026, a 2025 GMC Hummer EV went into thermal runaway inside Batista Auto Repair Center in Providence, Rhode Island. The vehicle had been in the shop for over a month following a previous accident. It wasn’t charging. Nobody was working on it. And then it spontaneously combusted.

When 3000lbs goes 40-0 along one axis in ~0 seconds, things can shift and get pinched. No external damage to the battery housing is no guarantee everything inside the housing is still where it needs to be. Battery packs contain square miles of ~25 microns thick separator, any failure of which could potentially start a thermal runaway.

It is a miracle of engineering and manufacturing that battery fires aren't a whole lot more common from how little material stands between safety and catastrophe.

The climate nutters have left trillions in destruction in their wake. Electricity bills have doubled and tripled. A new layer of expense has been added to every facet of our lives for what? I remember when Ford had to pull the Pinto off the roads for a seeming handful of fires after accidents. Now, governments are trying to make us buy this junk while ignoring all the hazards. What a stupid era we live in.

certain EVs seem prone to this and certain ones you never hear of a problem, do you think it is the quest for energy density causing shortcuts on safety, perhaps the insulators in the cells are too thin?

I wonder what kind of G forces the batteries can survive before potential internal damage. Just because the pack wasn't impinged on during a collision doesn't mean the cells were not affected by it. Pouch cells don't have a great deal of structural reinforcement within them, so I would expect a sharp acceleration to put significant stresses on the internals that could result in an internal short. Such a short may also take some time to materialise, as the disturbed internals of the cell may settle (plastic deformation or movement within the viscous medium) after the initial impact and only later come to rest in a position where an internal short develops.
