Nissan LEAF (2014) – New Battery Install

Learn how to install a new battery in a Nissan LEAF. We’ll show you how to replace/change/remove with simple tips and tricks to help get you started!

Tool List: 10mm wrench

This video covers the basic 12 volt battery replacement procedure for this 2014 Nissan LEAF. Although this video may provide you with the basic procedures, we recommend that you check with the vehicle manufacture’s step by step procedures found in service/repair manuals for the vehicle you are working on.

Even if your vehicle did not come with an AGM battery, you can upgrade to an AGM battery for up to 2x the life. AGM can be found at most retail outlets. You can learn more about AGM here: https://www.autobatteries.com/en-us/battery-technology-types/absorbent-glass-mat-agm-battery

The use of a memory saving procedure will keep the memory alive on the vehicle’s computer during the battery replacement procedure. Referring to our Memory Saving video will provide you with various memory saving procedures that can be used according to vehicle manufacturer’s requirements. https://youtu.be/vSP3ShcaFgQ

Some late model vehicles must have the 12 volt battery registered with the vehicle’s Battery Control Module or Computer after replacement. See these videos on Battery registration and coding for more details on the procedures at https://youtu.be/TGKohKZHzr0 & https://youtu.be/cxOK_DczRGg

Always wear safety glasses and gloves when working with or near batteries.

Today you saved me $100 dollars + TAX. I bought the battery ($125 dollars ) from the dealership and asked them how much that would be if they install it. Wow I can not still believe it.

Thanks–this worked on my 2014 Nissan Leaf just as described! Saved 50% over having a tire shop install and learned how to do this myself! Some clarifying details that may help others: (1) Not sure whether the first step (placing the battery maintainer) was necessary–I have a small unit (which I used to revive the previous battery before it died completely) but it slipped off at one point for a second, and yet all the settings in the vehicle seem to be intact. (2) The screws to remove the battery require an 11/32" socket wrench adapter. The center clamps can be removed with a small crescent wrench (this was the most time consuming part). (3) You need a second person to hold the negative terminal away from the old battery while you remove it, and again while you install the new battery. The second person can also shine a flashlight to help guide the center clamp hooks back into the holes at the base of the battery and hold the other side while you screw it back into place.

When does the Leaf 12v battery need to be replaced? Mine has 379 / 550 CCA cold cranking amps. The guy at the repair shop told me if I notice it having a hard time cranking the engine on…… I almost started laughing!!! Seriously, when is it time to replace?

Jon Josh Chua says:

What's on the other end of the jumper to keep the memory alive? Thanks!

Ramon Cardona says:

Gee, I purchased a replacement 12 volt battery from the dealership, disconnected the old one, connected the new one without using jumper cables. Car was fine, did not lose radio presents, etc. thanks

Hi, thanks for the video instruction for replacing the 12 volt battery in the LEAF. I have a quick question. I've recently learned that my Bolt requires an 12 volt AGM battery. Does the LEAF also use an AGM battery or does it use a standard gel battery? If it makes a difference, my LEAF is a 2015.

Robert Forlenza says:

This video teaches wrong. There is a general rule when replacing batteries. " First on last off"it means the negative cable is the first connected and the last to be removed . The negative terminal should always be connected when removing or installing positive terminal. If the battery is not grounded when power is applied it could cause the entire electrical system to short out which could be really expensive to fix. Otherwise great vid.

It did help me

This video is going to be very useful during coronavirus,
Many people are not using the car, and they don't know they should take the battery out..
