My mom has a 2006 Ford Explorer XLT with 4WD. Something in the front end
is howling when you get it up to highway speeds, kind of sounds like when
you’re halfway on the rumble strip. I’ve changed the fluid in the transfer
case and it locks in/out of 4 wheel drive, and the 4WD seems to work just
fine, I’ve checked the wheel bearings by trying to wiggle the wheels, and I
used a grease needle to grease all of the factory ball joints and tie rod
ends, but none of them seem to have any play or wear. What else could it
be, the front differential? There’s no drain plug on the one in the front
so when I take it off I’ll have to allot some time when she’s home for
several hours so I can get a new gasket, drain the old fluid, put on a new
gasket and let the new gasket set up with some gasket sealer for an hour or
two before filling it back up. I would just like a 2nd opinion from
somebody who knows more about cars than I do.

the upper control arm on the left wheel about 3 times the rubber just dont
last and the car starts making a cluncking noise what could cause this
problem ???
like your videos scotty, on ford escape 2001 that’s howling in the front
what might be the cause? and if the front diff fluid needs to be changed
where the drain plug is located i can only see the one for the transfer
case.
Hey Scotty, I just bought a used 2008 subaru wrx with 103,000 miles. It’s
running great but I noticed the Manual recommends changing differential
fluid every 35,000. Should I change the fluid or is it a waste of money and
time? I don’t know the last time it’s been done because it’s a used car.

car is parked and I shit into R or D it makes a thumping sound from the

Hi Scotty, I have a peugeot 206 which has stiff gear changes when going
down a gear and needs to be forced when driving, but only happen when
downshifting. Do I need a new clutch or change the fluid in the
transmission? Anything help is appreciated.
This is just a thought. shouldnt you see if the fill plug comes out first
?
I’d like to make a point. Make sure you can remove the fill plug before you
try to drain. If you drain it and can’t get the fill plug off, you’re kind
of stuck.
I have a 2002 honda civic. When its in neutral or 1-2 gear with the cluth
out it makes a raddling noise….if the clutch is in it doesnt make the
noise…
How do you fix a howling wife
Remember kids always remove the fill plug before taking out the drain plug.
Sometimes the fill plug will we rust welded and youll have no way to fill
the diff

I have a 1996 gti vr6 5 speed with a borla exhasut… I believe that really
low annoying sound is called Drone going past 50 mph, Well that noise
(Drone) is been happening just recently,,, never befored… The borla
exhaust is not too loud only when going full thottle …The problem is that
its happening even when I put the car in neutral going at 70 mph that low
sound is still there, so Maybe its not even Drone…Maybe You can help me
out here Please, I fits not too much to ask.

Scotty, I have a 2003 Chevy Avalanche 4wd with a very low RPM Exhaust
Resonance I can’t find. According to many Chevy owner sites I’m not alone.
It appears evidently on a lot of the full size GM 4wd 1500 series trucks.
Any thoughts on solving it would be appreciated.
Another point and a really good idea. Break the fill plug loose first to
make sure you can get it out before draining the diff.
It would be nice to see a before and after.

Its a good practice to open the fill plug first
I just replaced the rear differential fluid on my 4wd Pilot. The
manufacturer suggests changing it out every 15k, not sure how accurate this
is but since it’s a Honda I’ll take their word for it
I have to say, it is much better practice taking out the fill plug before
the drain plug just as a precaution so you dont drain all the fluid out
then find out that the fill plug won’t come out

Hi Scotty, Firstly, I love your video’s, please continuing making them.
With this video, you state that the ‘howling Honda’ noise is from the back
however a large majority of Honda’s are FWD vehicles with only a single
front diff due to that reason. Wouldn’t it been better to call this fixing
a rear diff noise (on any 4wd car) OR a front diff noise on a Honda) as
this will probably confuse or mislead people who don’t know the first thing
about FWD/RWD or 4WD. Thanks
Many of the questions in the comments are appalling… Please if you don’t
know how too fix your car pay someone too do it. Don’t just look up video’s
online and attempt too fix it yourself lol.
is there a copper washer or teflon tape u use for the drain and fill plug
bolts? or the thread of the plug seals it nicely?

Hi Scotty i wonder if you would have an idea for my problem. I have a 2010
Mazda 3 with a L4 2.0 vvt engine. I run Royal Purple 5w20 synthetic oil and
i change the oil and filter every 4k since i got it new. Most of the time,
she runs like a clock. But sometimes she has kind of a knocking sound in
the top end. Im a motorcycle mechanic and im afraid its the camshaft or the
lifters that may have some wear but its only 60k miles! Sounds like top to
me anyways. I didnt pull the valve cover yet (happens most of the time when
shes hot she pretty much always run fine when shes cold.). The thing that
bogs me is that sometimes she runs amazing just like new, and sometimes she
almost sounds like a dodge! Like you are at a red light, you stop, car runs
awesome (3 inche magnaflow catback), you accelerate to the next light then
stop to the next red light and she knocks on the top end like a bitch and
it frustrates me so i rev it a bit and sometimes it solves it. Always
disappears anyways during the ride. Also i have to say that i change the
oil at 4k because it happens more when the oil gets near that point. She
doesnt burn a drop of oil though. But the noise just kills me being
motorcycle mechanic i feel like i hurt the engine. I obviously hear it
happening when the car is idling. Its always at red lights or else.
Sometimes i push the engine really hard to hear if it hurts it self but it
seams to rev really fine. Lots of power also. But there is this small
knocking sound at idle that i hear that sounds top end to me.
I would have liked to hear what the car sounded like if possible. I’m
always like “what the hell is that sound now” on my cars
So I think the same thing will do for a GMC truck. right?

Thanks for sharing all your know how! I have a question on car paint. One
side of my car has a really faded paint that is very rough. It has the same
texture as some 200 grit sand paper. The car was left outside for most of
its life by the previous owner, and he never waxed it. Now I’m planning to
polish that side of the car but I’m worried that I might remove what little
clear coat I have left on that side. The left side looks like a showroom
car because of the work I put in but the right side looks like a burry
mess. What should I do?

Open the fill plug first, then the drain plug. If you can’t get the fill
plug undone, at least it still has fluid albeit dirty and noisy.

I strongly suggest opening the fill plug first. If you can’t get that open
for whatever reason you certainly don’t want to drain the fluid!
