this happened to me also.. replacement of Tensioner assembly did the fix
but i also replaced idler pulley as they both squeaked on my ’00 towncar
4.6 the pulley came with the tensioner arm..
to anyone with a similar problem: today i replaced my idler pulley ($20)
and also replaced the belt with a dayco belt ($30) and my NASTY squeak is
gone. the only hard part is getting to that tensioner bolt. you can do it,

Man, you didn’t have to mess with the fan. All you needed to do was put a
15mm box wrench and leverage with another box wrench and walla the belt is
off in less than 30 seconds.
I don’t think you can replace either the tension or idleler pulleys without
using a torque wrench. Those pulleys need to have a very specific amount of
torque from my understanding.
Had the same thing on my 2002 explorer wasn’t that bad tho only did it when
it was cold had to replace the pulley tensioner & idler pulley my idler
pulley looked just like yours

reason why it came back is because the tensioner pulley was going out too,
dealer will charge over 300 bucks for that so it would be better to get it
yourself. i didnt because it didnt have the fan tool
Fords are always hard to work on, I had a 2.3 Mustang that thing was hard
to work on. have to take off the intake manifold with wrenches to get to
the valve cover
god dude it doesn’t take enormous strength for that belt. 1/4 inch socket
wrench push towards left fender takes all the tension off. Note though you
do have to have the fan shroud free so you can get at the belt tensioner.
some rangers had the tensioner at the top and the idler pulley below the
alternator
Long story short. You should replace both the idler and tensioner pulley
and also the serpetine belt. Remove air cleaner hose with screwdriver,
after that step the only tool you need is a 15 mm wrench. Put boxed end of
wrench on 15 mm bolt on tensioner and push towards the ground. Remove belt.
Now remove the 15 mm bolt from tensioner pulley to remove pulley. Now
remove the idler pulley. Put new pulleys and belt back on. You do not need
to remove the shroud. Easy 20 min DIY job. Saves $300.

cold wet weather was that true for you?
My Ranger is making that same noise right now, and I think it is the idler
pulley. Did the sound ever come back after you applied the wd-40. If you
changed the belt, did the truck make that noise with a fresh belt on? Thx.

next time replace the tensioner pulley at the sane time ,, spend the exter
20$. fool. wait wait. now go buy a belt too.
i did an oil change on one like yours, not sure if it was the same motor
but FUCK I HATE WHERE THE OIL FILTER IS
Why can’t you just replace the bearings? Why replace the tensioner pulley

fan shroud off wtf? reach down to the tensioner pulley with a 15mm box
wrench. you must be a toyota queer!

changing the oil filter and spark plugs are a bitch. it’s actually worth
paying someone else to do it.

have the tool to get the fan off so had the dealer do it.

any frame rust or stuck gas pedals?
I went to a Napa and could only get the pulley. Summer would have the
washer too?

Cougar and that Torx bolt doesnt want to come off

I got mine at a local Napa store, but im sure you can get one on Summit’s
website.
