My biggest negative with a lot of the European engines in recent decades – the
switch to cam belts.
The durability, and common lack of servicing needed with chains makes this
move ridiculous.
Of course, some of the cam chain designs on the Mini have proved to be
very problematic, notably in relation to their VVT, but that's down to this
crappy design, rather than a flaw with cam chains generally.
IIRC some of the TTs are chain – which are the only ones I would buy.

The matt issue – 2 ideas –
velcro strip – one section to the reverse of the matt, and one section on
the car carpet
— OR – adding some material to the hole in the matt which the stud situates in –
– a suitable silicon maybe? Trial and error likely necessary
