As an owner of BMW's for over 25 years, I am pretty sure the manufacture does not recommend this technique!
Its probably a loose ribbon cable, not the display that faulty. Sending 10000v or whatever these things habe through that is not gonna help 😀
My E46 still drove with 9 volts when the alternator brushes failed after 18 years, was a bit nailbiting driving 50 miles with no alternator though, at night. It seems they can tolerate a bit of 'variation' in the electrical supply with no harm. Not saying they're bulletproof but electrically all that went wrong with mine in 8 years was a parking sensor (£25), DSC sensor (£40), and the wing mirror internal wiring (£200), that's due to poor design the last one, with the ribbon cables that corrode on later E46s. Cheap repairs. Not a low maintenance car though overall as they're complex, but not too bad. Still on original clutch and exhaust at 175,000 miles too.
isn't the reason that the pixels go in BMWs because of the poor connectivity at the ribbon connectors ?
