Awesome, … I think I'll give it a try.  I read that clutch dust cleaning on the interior to the starter motor will clear up the noise problem. Or should I just buy a new start motor?

Dennis Gentry says:

What year VWs is this for? I think for the 1987 Jetta (previous generation or two generations to the one you're working on?) starter, you can't do it this way — it's even tighter, so I'm looking at removing and replacing both the intake and exhaust manifolds.

If i had access to a lift that could lift the whole car up over my head would that work better? I found one at a scrap yard for $15 if i brought the old one back to them. how do i know that my starter is the problem for sure? I'm almost positive that it is my problem but whenever i start the car it smells like gas fumes. more so than normal. the inside of the car doesnt smell that way but with the hood up it really smells like gas. thanks.

Everyone! I have a 2001 VW Jetta. Take out the whole battery from the top and then take out the base for the battery and BOOM! Easy access to the starter! Take the starter out from top. Saves you time.
