In this video, I have a look at a customer’s 2011 Toyota Corolla that came in with what looked like a never-ending list of problems. The check engine light was on with multiple EVAP system codes, the ABS light was illuminated, the horn didn’t work, and the vehicle was overdue for New York State Inspection.
The stored trouble codes included:
P043E – EVAP System Leak Detection Reference Orifice High Flow
P043F – EVAP System Leak Detection Reference Orifice Low Flow
P2401 – EVAP Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit Low
P2402 – EVAP Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit High
P2419 – EVAP System Switching Valve Control Circuit Low
C1201 – Engine Control System Malfunction
C1422 – Master Cylinder Pressure Sensor Circuit
The horn concern was diagnosed and traced to a failed spiral cable (clock spring), restoring proper horn operation after replacement.
As for the EVAP system… I made a judgment call. After seeing enough of these Corollas with the exact same group of codes, I chose to replace the EVAP canister assembly based on experience rather than spending additional time proving what history strongly suggested. If I’d been wrong, that risk was mine, not the customer’s.
Fortunately, experience paid off. The EVAP repair corrected the fault, all of the codes stayed gone, the emissions drive cycle completed successfully, and the Corolla was ready to pass New York State Inspection.
Sometimes the service manual tells you how to prove a failure. Experience tells you when proving it isn’t worth the customer’s money.
Thanks for watching!

Soooo…about that top 5 rotted out, are you not concerned about getting underneath it? (Maybe Chicken Little is correct about the sky falling down)?
I was watching Alone last night and they have a woman from Newyork bow hunting. I told my wife that you guys probably know her. My wife said oh my god do you know how big the State of Newyork is?
I told her that the bow-hunting community might be small. So who is right Rocko?
This channel is the best education a young tech could get.
As payback, I hope your horn tootin prematurely woke up lawn mower man!
After watching this channel for awhile, you made me aware that vehicles corrode to junkyard ready in just 10 years! Living here in California with a 14 year old car that still runs new, it makes me sting a little bit less about our $6 gas. Driving in your area is really expensive!
What in the world is a clock spring? I don't think that my 49 Plymouth or my 37 Ford ever had one or needed one for that matter! Has our automotive world gone crazy or what?
congratulations on 1M subs. that's a pretty big deal…
Eric, you need to be careful with your little knife…it’s known by the state of California that it may cause cancer…but probably only in California..
