What happens when a purge valve goes bad?
If your canister purge valve is stuck open, however, it creates a vacuum leak that can affect your engine adversely. This will change the car’s air to fuel ratio, and can cause rough idling (car feels rough and bouncy when the engine is running), as well as difficulty starting.
Car is hard to start Inspection
When you fill your gas tank, a lot of fumes build up in the fuel tank and usually excess fumes come out of the fuel filled tube and out to atmosphere or into a recovery system in the fuel pump handle.
You may have a purge valve that is not sealing correctly, and the fumes are going into your engine causing your engine to be flooded with fumes while you are refueling. You can help your car start by holding the throttle wide open to get extra air into the engine to get it started, and then letting off the gas once it starts. This is only a way to get it started after refueling until you get the purge valve replaced to fix the problem. If the problem persists, have a mechanic diagnose your car’s hard starting problem to verify what needs to be done.
This appears to be a common problem on this vehicle, and it may be related to overfilling the tank, though I can’t be sure but I have been guilty of doing this often. The purge valve sticking open is a common issue, but it could be caused by a failed canister. I think I would start with checking the purge valve. If the purge valve is stuck open, it could cause starting problems.
What Does P0496 Mean? The Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) System seals the fuel system of the vehicle in order to prevent fuel vapors from the fuel tank and fuel system from escaping into the atmosphere. This is important because fuel vapors contain a variety of hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons form smog when they react with air and sunlight. Gasoline evaporates very quickly, so if the fuel system is open to the atmosphere a vehicle can pollute 24 hours per day without even being turned on. These uncontrolled evaporative emissions account for as much as 20% of the pollution produced by a vehicle! When trouble code P0496 is set, it means that there is an issue with the purge flow in the EVAP system.

Have a 2008 and I've had to replace this stupid valve twice now. The first time was under warranty which was good because back then that valve was $75.00. Now they are dirt cheap and easy to do so not all that bad I guess. I too was having the no start issue after very short drives only. If you hold the peddle down and crank the hell out of it, you can get it to finally start. Now it's just a matter of passing emissions so I had to replace it.

This vehicle is just a spare vehicle for us now but it could have remained a daily driving if it wasn't such a pile of junk. It's the worst vehicle i've ever owned and as a lifetime GM lover the reason I'll never buy a GM vehicle again. Too many electrical problems, AC expansion valve, oil in the intake issue, interior plastic parts are crap, etc. Moved on to Toyota afterward and couldn't be happier.

I will say the motor runs very strong and the transmission is great but otherwise, I'd never recommend any of the current GM versions of this platform which there are many now.

I got the same error code except instead of having trouble starting or idling mine chugs gas like there's no tomorrow.
