You may want to see if the wiper arm is stripped and needs to be replaced, that might be why it’s not staying in the same position. We carry new wiper arms on our website 1aauto.com FREE SHIPPING in the lower 48 states, if you need a new one. 888-844-3393

my driver side wiper goes completely off of the window and then gets stuck in mid air or it slams on to the window until it gets stuck then I have to reposition the arm and restart my car for it to work.. any suggestions

The transmission on the 2003-2007 Ions are all the same.

MrChuckyspoons says:

any idea if an 04 saturn ion’s wiper motor would work with an 03? any idea if in replacing the transmission i messed up the motor by accident?

MrChuckyspoons says:

any idea if an 04 saturn ion’s wiper motor would work with an 03?

1aauto says:

It could be an issue with the motor at this point since they the stop is internal to the motor and not the transmission.

MrChuckyspoons says:

i was having the same issue with the wipers as joshmosh so i got new wiper arms. my issue now is that the resting place for the wipers is at a 45 degree angle. i tried loosening the nuts and placing the arms at the bottom of the windshield w/o moving the transmission position but they keep returning to the 45 degree angle. any fixes?

1aauto says:

You may want to check the arms to see if they are stripped where the stud attaches to them. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

JOshMOsh says:

Hello, Your video is very helpful, I have replaced the motor and the transmission, the transmission and everything works WITHOUT the arms attached, but when you put the arms on it won’t work, it WILL work with the passenger side arm only, but not with both installed, if you remove the arms, everything runs as it should, but not with the wiper arms attached. I am at a loss as both the motor and transmission are brand new, any ideas? Thanks

I used your video last night to change my linkage, it was dead on and very helpful! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you…your video made doing this as easy as it could be.

1aauto says:

it could be either a bad wire or an issue with the wiper switch.

Mario Cyr says:

I have a Malibu 2001 and wipers don’t stop when ON, only way to stop them is to stop the car. Any idea what to do about it? …Mario, Nova Scotia,Canada

George Hoaglin says:

Just wanted to say Thank You for the great instructional video. I ordered the replacement linkage and the uninstall/re-install went very smooth, and now my wife’s car is safe again!!

1aauto says:

as long as there is some place to attach the transmission to the motor and it also holds it in place (clip nut, bolt or anything else), you should be fine.

meld84mac says:

I’ve just replaced the whole assembly …however the old assembly seemed to be threaded on the inside where it attaches and is actuated by the motor and the new one isn’t. Will this still work or will it just become loose?

1aauto says:

It could be the transmission linkage again. I wouldn’t rule anything out until it is looked at.

regis7136 says:

My wiper motor turns over but the wipers do not move. Transmission switched out last year. Any ideas?

Needsnonitro says:

I ran into this issue after watching this video also. You need to observe the rotation of the motor when it is turned on. Then attach the arm to the motor. Then turn the motor in the observed direction while also observing the how the wiper arm attachments are moving. Move it until the wiper attachments are just starting to move in the upward direction. This should prove effective!

UndergroundShow says:

hey @Andysign77 . I just replaced my 03 saturn ion windshield wiper assembly and had the same issue. There is a yellow rectangular metal piece that connects the motor bolt to the wiper assembly. When the motor is at rest (wipers down position) the yellow piece should point directly to the right (3 o’clock if you are standing infront of your car looking at the motor) It looks like when I put on the new assembly I moved the position of that piece. The bolt I’m talking about is shown at 4:06

1aauto says:

It sounds like you may have a short or possible crossed wire somewhere.

Andysign77 says:

Thanks for this. Helped a lot. However I’ve run into a bit of an issue. When I turn the wipers on, they seem to want to go counterclockwise first, and then clockwise. So when the wipers are on, they just go to the bottom of the glass and stop. Any idea why? I’m a novice at this 🙂

1aauto says:

The issue could be with the actual bushing inside the linkage binding up and causing the wipers to act up. You might want to replace the entire assembly just so you have a completely fresh unit inside there.

Im having problems with my wipers not working if it get at around -8c, they work fine other that that. what could be the problem?

Keith Devries says:

Thanks a lot for the video! I followed it step by step and was successful (though it took me a whole day hahah.)
NOTE if you’re trying this too.. get ahold of the wiper puller tool. I had to go to a mechanic just for that step because with all the prying and prodding i couldn’t get it.

1aauto says:

Once the transmission is bolted in place, take the wiper arms off. turn the wipers on and then off. Now position the arms at their resting position at the bottom of the windshield. That should help.

Kerry Bean says:

Great video – thank you! However, I’m struggling to properly orient the transmission so that the wiper arms operate properly – any suggesitons?

jp herrera says:

Thanks a lot for posting this video. I didn’t realize so many Saturns had this problem. My wiper had the broken plastic piece. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong or how to fix it(not very car savvy, didn’t know there were those stupid plastic caps covering the bolts).Every time it snowed or rained I dreaded going out, because I knew my wiper would hang off the side of my car and not work.I will probably be ordering a new wiper transmission from 1aauto. Thanks again.
