Back-Up Camera DIY Install – Porsche 911

Back-Up Camera DIY Install – Porsche 911

In this video I install a back-up camera from CAI-Store.com that connects into my JoyeAuto Apple CarPlay unit I installed recently. This DIY video includes step-by-step guides to removing the rear tail lights, the rear bumper, the inner wheel arch trim and of course, installing the back-up cam itself. Enjoy!

As ever, thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting my channel. Keep the comments and chat coming! More videos coming soon. Cheers!

Thanks for letting me watch this. You convinced me to never want to do that kind of work just for a back up camera. I’ll turn my head and look behind me.

juice5280 says:

James, since you are providing power to the camera from the joyeauto box, how does the joyeauto know when you are in reverse?

Jaime B says:

Next time just buy a wireless camera with no wires from back to front of the car. I installed one on my 997 turbo, works like a charm, it would make your life easier, believe me! Cheers!

B L says:

Can u show how to took off the wire box from the underneath of the stereeing wheel?

B L says:

May i know what year of ur porsche?

Nick Alejandro says:

@AutoAmateur – Did you have any issue with the back up camera install and the Apple carplay?

paul l says:

The parking sensors front and back on mine are good enough. Don't know if you have them.

Niels Roskam says:

Love the tinkering, but are you not afraid you cut a seal on the front, and now let all the rainwater come in through your front wheel arch?

Go4Gold1000 says:

Hi, thanks a lot for the video! I also already have the Joyeauto box and now I'm also planning to install a backup camera. But I was wondering if I understand the wiring? In a German forum I red that I have to connect the camera to the tail light so that the camera only turns on when I'm in reverse but if I understood your video correctly you just connected the camera to the Joyeauto box, right? How does the box know when you are in reverse?

Porschee944 says:

Good job Man!!! Great video

Sander Arts says:

Nice job!
I have parking sensors and I am curious what happens to the screen when I connect a backup camera to the Joyeauto system. Will the sensors visual display be added to the camera view?

ecolyn says:

Good job James ! Allways quality video !

S E says:

I bought a wireless reverse camera to transmit video signal to the receiver with RCA jack (reverse-cameras.com they sell both wired and wireless versions for 991 and 981). The receiver will connect video in to Joyeauto box. However I need power to the wireless camera with transmitter which will fit one of the license light section. Please advise the way I should get power for the camera transmitter. Mine is 2014 981BS.

John Wilde says:

I almost screamed out NO! when you took a knife to the grommet. Dis you reseal it with mastic afterward? Great vid – probably your best yet but why didnt you go in via the back and slip the cable under the trim edge? I have done that before several times for aerials, sat-nav etc. Perhaps when you do it for front and rear camera on the 996 that is what you will do? Be brave!

Dyrk Zapata says:

Nice job! Been looking at doing this myself. I also added the CarPlay / Joyeauto (thanks to your video). Looks like a pain to run the cable.

Todd at stone_city_outlaw says:

Ok, at the 16:00 mark who else thought, "OMG, he has a knife!"

Vincent T. says:

Ok watching you remove that rear bumper makes me want to keep my 997.2 forever! What a pain in the arse just to get to the engine. Nevertheless you did a great job installing that camera. Your boys are growing up so fast, pretty soon they will be Porsche fanatics.

Laurent BENOIT says:

gooooood job dude.
better and better video after video.
So impatient to see the job on the 996 now you're a Porsche pro
thumb up from France

Simon Chadwick says:

Great job converting your sauna into a garage, James 😉 Perhaps there is a pedestal or box fan in your future? Or perhaps an Ice Water Circulating Cooling Vest: https://amz.run/3Gyb
