I had the same problem with my cutlass,it wouldn't start after driving it around for a while,header getting the starter hot.i installed a remote solenoid and fixed the problem.Jegs 10301 remote solenoid kit

When I built this car I said it needed a mini starter.
Can you get a mini starter and maybe some sort of heat shield.
