there is not oil filer?

XxinvASIANxX says:

how many quarts? of atf?

znofxz says:

Yo caveman joe…. How often should you change this? I got 124k on mine and
don’t think it’s ever been changed….

caveman joe says:

Yep, according to the owner’s manual these particular transfer cases take
automatic transmission fluid.

caveman joe says:

I believe they’re the same, they hold the same amount of fluid, and from
pictures the drain and fill plugs are in the same position.

caveman joe says:

There is a differential in the rear and front axles, the transfer case is
bolted to the transmission. It’s all about how the power from the engine is
transmitted, first through the transmission, then through the transfer
case(4wd), then through the rear drive shaft to the rear differential, and
also the front drive shaft if the 4wd is engaged. The haynes book might
mean a two speed transfer case.

Muhammad Babamia says:

I have a 2006 Nissan pathfinder. When I turn the dial to 4 HI, it works
perfectly but when I turn the dial to 4 LO, it does not engage and then it
gives an error light (4WD). Is it possible that the cause might be that the
transfer case oil needs to be changed.

caveman joe says:

Are you still going forward when shifting? I only shift into 4HI in first
gear, and always shift into 4LO when I’m stopped and in neutral(I have a
six speed manual). When in doubt also check the owner’s manual to see what
safe speeds for shifting or procedures. It’s easy enough to also check
fluid level, just take out the fill plug and see if the fluid is at least
to the bottom of the fill hole. Hope some of that helps.

caveman joe says:

According to the Chilton book, every 60,000 miles or 48 months. Amsoil says
every four years or 100,000 miles, so it depends on driving conditions and
what products you use, but better late than never.

caveman joe says:

Unfortunately, it’s either really simple(drain fluid and replace with the
proper fluid), or it’s one of fifteen different error codes, which could be
anything from a bad actuation motor, bad sensor, or a simple short in the
wiring. You may need to take it in, unless you have a code reader to tell
you what it is exactly. I apologize for not being much better help.

Caveman joe- great video.

caveman joe says:

Depends on the year, I know the transfer case on the second generation
frontier is different than the one on the first generation. I believe the
first generation frontier could use the same GL-4 gear oil that the five
speed used, but also recommended ATF if it was an automatic. With these
transfer cases all they recommend is ATF, either automatic transmission or
six speed manual.

Muhammad Babamia says:

I tried that but it still does not engage

caveman joe says:

From Amsoil, it fits quart, gallon, and 2 and a half gallon jugs.

caveman joe says:

According to my owner’s manual, you need to be stopped, in neutral for
automatic or shifter in neutral position for manual, and pushing on the
brake pedal.

caveman joe says:

It’s two and a quarter quarts of atf, I use a synthetic to hopefully
protect better.

James Rock says:

When u said differential means at the rear right? When u said transfer case
its in the front… Sorry im confused sometimes. I have 2001 nissan
frontier 4×4 3.3 engine.. The hayes boos said i have 2 stransfer case. Is
that correct?

iwyiwy says:

Cavemen, do you know If this transfer case is similar to a 4×4 Nissan
Titan? Thanks

Jose Zamora says:

Cave man is the transfer case for an automatic and a five speed the same??

scotty p says:

where did you get the pump to get fluid back in?

caveman joe says:

Thanks, as long as it helps.

MrTinflo says:
