Mercury Outboards: Stator Install & Testing

Mercury Outboards: Stator Install & Testing

Final series on the franchise engine. A lot of surprises as I progressed into the “deeper issues…..” Any questions please leave the in the comments. As shown no one is invincible to outboard issues. Thanks for watching!!!!

Dan fix it man says:

Hi mercson. I tested my l6 115 today on the water, it ran great , took right off. Did about 56mph top speed on a 15 foot hydrostream. Just wanted to say thank you for all your helpfull videos and info. Dan.

Richard Clark says:

does it really matter about the striped blue and red going to top or bottom switch box. I think I have mine wired opposite.

Dan fix it man says:

Hi mercson. What's a good timing set range for these l6 engines? Just trying to tweak mine the best I can. Also trying to get lower than 1000 rpm ?

Dan fix it man says:

Ok thank you. What's a good idle for the 85 l6 adi ignition, about 1,000 ?

Dan fix it man says:

Hi mercson. I had a question to ask, I just want your thoughts on it. Befor I owned my l6 someone must have removed the flywheel and didn't put the timing marks back correctly. I was going to use the piston stop method. And make my own timing mark on the flywheel cover. Instead of pulling the flywheel. What do you think ?

jamrs pancurak says:

Always an pleasure

Dan fix it man says:

Hi again Mr.mercson. I just wanted to ask if you ever used those new clear resin switch boxes ? I ordered 2. I just thought how could you beat that price of 25 dollars each. I hope it isn't cheap junk. What do you think?

Shane and Aria Bernhardt says:

Hey Mercson, Always enjoy your vids. You’re a great teacher for us guys with the old inlines. I have posted questions before and have another. I have a 1984 L6 90 hp. Been chasing electrical problems. Had some intermittent spark issues did the easier fixes first. I first replaced the cdi boxes and coils. Seemed like cylinders would miss randomly and a couple coils must have had hairline cracks, could see arcing when run in the dark. This seemed to help with running except for idle.

I double checked timing and made sure butterfly’s where closing and opening fine. Carbs seem to work really good have good fuel flow. Did the link and sink.

Motor died on us one day found some crusty wires off the stator to the rectifier fixed wires but had a fried rectifier. Decided to run without rectifier because my idle was fine when unhooked, but now it doesn’t rev up, have to play with the throttle to get it to rev when on the water under load.

This whole time I have been thinking a bad stator, But it ohms fine according to the CDI troubleshooting guide. I bought a dva adapter and found the upper voltages from the blue and the blue with white were in spec but the red and red white were out of spec higher voltages. Also after watching this vid I double checked voltages at the coils and they are all below 150 volts but number 4. It’s quite similar to your problems. Am assuming I need a stator. Think the low side charging died first, why it fried the rectifier and now the high side is going.

I guess I am asking if this sounds right from an expert. Also the trigger ohms fine, but should I replace it while under the flywheel. I know this is a long post but your input is really appreciated.

Tompa A says:

Hi i have a 90hp 6 cyl and measures on stator blue white to gnd is 33 k ohm first and now it is 20 m ohm / and blue to gnd is 6500 is that the problem? dont´t get spark on 3 cylinders when cranking

Stephen Hobbs says:

I have a 1984 90 hp and I just changed out the stator because the readings, like you are doing here, were low. The new readings were 300-400 for 1,4 and 6 and then it would change and be less than 200, like the old stator. The readings were changing every time I started the motor. It sometimes stalls when I am probing it, if I take it off, it will stay running. Whatever the issue is, it's intermittent and explains why it won't idle very long. Any ideas?

Joshua Greene says:

Installed a new trigger and now I have the high idle issue where it won't idle below 1400 rpms. Any suggestions?

Hubjeep says:

2:39 Don't use a torque wrench as a breaker bar!! Go to Harbor Freight and pick up a 24" bar for $10 BTW, stators are so dang expensive! $400-$500 for my 2.5L 200

STORY TIME WITH UNCLE KUMARAN says:

is that a BAJA ?? My buddy has a 1974 16' in the same color…. with the tower of power

Frank Cimini says:

Is there any way I can get some help on my outboard from you? You are very mechanically knowledged and I have no clue where to start or how to check things.

Michael says:

He man is it possible to get you to do a video on how to get the tachometer work right on an adi L6

Digging the Mitten says:

Thanks for the video. Helps me understand more of what I need to do to my motor.

Hodorr Hodorr says:

Hell yeah it’s Steven, I loved the video can’t wait for boat money hahaha what’s the tool called to remove fly wheel ?

BigManBassin says:

Son, Great videos, I have an 86 115 tower of power and I am having the issue of no spark on the odd number cylinders like you had on the other video. I replaced my switch box and have also tested the trigger switch and had 1200 on all wires. Would you suggest the stator is the problem?

R Jacq says:

Thank you for this video, it's been very helpful

Bill Blevins says:

Hey Son, on my 1988 Merc 115 L6 I had lost spark on cylinders 3, 4 & 6 during cool conditions and then it would clear up after running 5 – 10 Mins. Replaced the stator and I regained spark on 6 but 3 & 4 are still not sparking. Coils passed test. I'm thinking the switch boxes are the culprit now (your thoughts?). Note: Rectifier test failed, ordering new one but I don't believe this has anything to do with my spark problems. Also, the trigger test passed also. Thanks so much for your time sir!!

ScotchStraight says:

How do you test the switchboxes?

eric lecorney says:

I just received the replacement Jetunit stator for my 1985 45HP Mercury and the Jetunit installation manual specified that I should install a regulator for this stator. Is it a generic information or I have to install it? If I have to do it, could you suggest me a model of regulator? Thank you.PS , sorry for my approximative English.

Evelio Hernandez says:

The video quality isn't good. You need other person to take video.

Nieves Mares says:

Could a flywheels lose its magnetism? After installing a new stator, still no spark on #2. New stator dva adapter give me low voltage, same reading as the old stator. Could it be the magnets? or could the starter not be cranking fast enough? I inspected the flywheel still looks good, no broken magnets or anything. Any suggestions?

Michael Rayborn says:

I want to start off with your videos have helped me lot , and I really appreciate you doing them, I do have a question if you have the time ? I have a mercury 115 tower of power and it runs fine on hose but in the water it doesn’t want to idle, how do I idle the engine up a little to run in water, my cell number is 6018966582 , my name is mike thanks

Chris Cruickshank says:

HI Son! I dont know how else to message you…so im going this route…i recently bought a boat that came with a 90 hp merc tower of power…im not sure where to look…but the numbers i did find lead me to believe its a 79….so my question is …where do i look to find out the actual year….and…what is the OEM compression rating needing to be at?! Chris

savage4356 says:

Hi, thanks for your vids. I come from Italy and I have a 115 inline 6 to restore. By chance do you know any inline 6 enthusiasts in Italy to contact? Thanks a lot.

mercmanwon says:

The in-line are all SAE nuts and bolts, no metric. Nice job explaining what you are doing.
