Jim Wellman says:

Watch my video on thermostat replacement. What my problem ended up being
was that i had a bad thermostat. When I removed the thermostat I found that
there was a bunch of weeds and sand clogged inside. Once I replaced the
thermostat I was back in action.

David Tweddle says:

Great help mate…I’d look everywhere then found your video….excellent.
Some design engineer needs to get a simpler life…can you imagine why this
has been set up this way….sheeeeesh! Thanks David Perth West Australia

Lionel Berthelon says:

When l go back to my sons to work on the motor l will try to make a video
and if there is a deference being my is an 89 and yours 99 l will post the
findings.

nissejarnet says:

Thanks for the upload man! Im just about to change the impeller on my 97
15hp and its the same way 🙂

Lionel Berthelon says:

ls’int there a clip or keeper on the other side of the arm that keeps the
pin shaft in place once it’s put back in, l see something that looks liked
a spring clip on the other side. l haven’t been back to my sons house to
take down the lower unit since l saw your video, will post the results.
Thanks again

Jim Wellman says:

Good luck. Let me know if I can assist in any way.

Chris Moore says:

Thanks. Great help.

Norm Art says:

Thanks a bunch, all the videos say remove the bolts and just pull the lower
case, well not exactly with the Merc, thanks again.

T Valine says:

The small Mercury outboards from this era have an integrated
shift/throttle. Once you know how to disconnect the linkage, the lower unit
disassembly is quite easy.

Lionel Berthelon says:

Thanks for the video this is just what l was looking for, have the same
motor but it’s a 1988 15hp long shaft with the same linkage hook up, did
you remove the starter l don’t seen to have as much room as l’m seeing in
your video, Thanks for posting

ltdan1620 says:

Good video! I couldn’t figure out how to remove the shifter linkage.
Definitely cleared things up and my 94 merc 9.9 runs like a dream.

ThePtm526 says:

Thanks Jim. I should have come here first. Wasted two hours trying to
figure out how to get that shift rod off. Broke the linkage rod in the
process.

tpwellman says:

once you generate some income you might be able to afford a camera man

Charlie Adams says:

Thanks man. This video was a little dark but you got the main explanation
across.

Jim Wellman says:

I don’t have it apart right now, but I don’t think there is any other clip
to retain the shaft other than the shift shaft retainer.

Fabian Singh says:

I agree with the last post, wtf why does it have to be so complicated?

Jim Wellman says:

Yes, I had to remove the starter before getting down in there.

Sven Ondelay says:

Thanks a lot, just what I needed.

Me & Mo says:

Jim, did the impellor replacement fix the problem? I have the same issue.

sheik250 says:

Thank you!!! Took awhile but found the clip down behind the starter
solenoid on my 1996 mercury 25hp… 2 thumbs up!!

Ryan Butler says:

I have been looking all over for this info. Thanks, you made is so easy for
me to understand.

Mudpout50 says:

Thanks Jim! I am replacing my water pump on a 15hp merc. I was not sure how
to drop the lower unit. The manual does not explain it very well in regards
to the shaft retainer. Your video made it a breeze!

sirjohnyahya says:

Very helpful indeed. Just what I was looking for. Thanks for sharing. the
knowledge.

jackd297 says:
