In this video we are showing you how to remove and replace the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley on Mercedes w163. We demonstrated on a 2000 ML430 but it should be the same procedure from 1998 to 2005 for the v6 and v8 engine which will cover the ml320 ml430 ml350 and ml500.
If you hear a noise coming from the belt it is very likely to be a pulley. The way to diagnose it is to remove the belt and spin them by hand. If they have a play or they are noisy you will need to replace them.
This procedure should work for:
1998 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
1999 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2000 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2001 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2002 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2003 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2004 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2005 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement

Terrific video. I was able to do this without removing the fan and kept my fingers more or less intact. I used a couple of socket wrenches linked together to give my assistant an easy way to hold the tensioner aside while I removed the lower bolt. The replacement part had a pin in place so it was no big deal to get to it for the install. I had tried in vain to get a pin in the tensioner to ease in removal but just couldn't get the hole to line up.

Hector Ventayer says:

Yous are legends. Just saved me heaps. You have great mechanical knowledge.

Ken D. says:

Thank you for showing how to get that back bolt in the bent tensioner!!!! This is the best video series for weekend wrenching!

Matt says:

Do you guys have a video of crankshaft pulley replacement?

Torah Teacher says:

I have a 2002 ML500 with a broken tensioner pulley. The tensioner itself is fine but the pulley is broken. How do I remove the pulley FROM the tensioner?

A replacement pulley will arrive in a few days, so I may have a better idea then.

Thank you in advance!!

Cold as ice says:

Just saved the day. Thanks brother!!

Robert Marshall says:

Love your videos! Super helpful, and easy to follow.

I'm in the middle of replacing my tensioner pulley, idler pulley and water pump on my 2003 ML500. But, I've hit a snag.

I was able to remove the two E-12 bolts that hold the tensioner pulley to the motor block. But, it doesn't seem to want to come away from the motor. Your video makes it look like it should just come right out. is there any trick to extracting it other than removing the two bolts???

Che Tan says:

My Ml320 tensioner pulley doesn't have a bolt to loosen the belt. It's an older type. What to do to get it out?

Gene says:

I like your very helpful videos thanks,, How come no one ever cleans their engine?

Apptech13 says:

Any idea what to do if the bolt head for the tensioner is completely rounded off?

zahir chaudhury says:

someone tell me what screw it is for the idler pulley

Mike Pantelis says:

I fucking love you bro! Btw same procedure on w211 minus the fan part.

KRAWNIK T says:

My idler pulley doesn't have the torx bolt… instead it's just a bearing covert that is completely smooth except for a divet in the center with a small pin dead center. How do you remove?

Orange says:

Just imagine breaking that idler pulley bolt when reinstalling it! Whats the torque spec on that bolt? 25nm?

Terrance Lee says:

great video. big help.

Nera Nebus says:

What are the bolt torque values?

Would you please let me know if the AC compressor pulley can be replaced on the car without removing the compressor itself.
Thank you for your help
