Mercedes Benz W210, W220 No Start – Crankshaft Position Sensor DIY

Mercedes Benz W210, W220 No Start – Crankshaft Position Sensor DIY

If your S500, S430, or E320 does not start, or if you get the following fault codes, you need to replace your CPS. However, I recommend you replace this before it fails at every 70,000 miles. Engine Fault Code: P0335, P0336, P0337, P0338, P0339, P0385.

I just replaced my crankshaft position sensor yesterday. It was for a 2001 CLK55 AMG. After fiddling around with different extensions I ended up using a 1/4" ratchet with a two inch extension and the socket to loosen the bolt. I broke the bolt loose with the ratchet and used just the extension and socket to finish taking out the bolt. I was able to squeeze the bolt against the socket to prevent it from dropping while I was lifting the bolt out. I used superglue on the socket and bolt to keep the bolt in place so I could install the bolt back in. I found that it was easier for me to put the bolt through the hole in the sensor and then install the sensor and the bolt as a unit. The bolt will be in the correct position for the bolt to be twisted in to get it started. After I pushed in the sensor a bit I started turning the extension to get the bolt started. I twisted the bolt until I could feel that I needed to finish pushing in the sensor completely which I then proceeded to do. Then I focused on finishing up running the bolt in. I then followed up with tightening the bolt down using the ratchet. I could barely see the sensor from looking at it. But once my hand gets down into the space I couldn't see it at all. I relied on my sense of touch to finish doing the job. Overall after I was done it wasn't that bad of job to do. It took some back and forth motions for a bit until I came up with a solution that worked for me. I thought I was going to have to take the car in to a shop to finish this job. I wiggled the socket a bit to crack the superglue apart to get the socket out.
Before I replaced the sensor. The engine would warm up in a rough idle and when taking off the power could be weak and it actually felt like it wanted to die. When I came off of the freeway the idle was rough. Fuel mileage dropped lower than I expected. It's odd my scanner didn't pickup the faulty crankshaft sensor problem. I only knew it was the crankshaft sensor after the engine died. Then the check engine light turned on. I was also getting an upcoming engine code problem from my oxygen sensor. It said it was having a problem warming up. The new crank sensor fixed everything for me. The upcoming problem code for the oxygen sensor warning didn't show up after replacement of the crank sensor.

What a pain in the ass. Fixed my crank-no start issue though. No codes.

So I’m working on 06 clk but have stored code p0025 for continuous camshaft adjustment (left) incorrect position of exhaust camshaft, replaced camshaft position sensor, still cranked but no start. Currently replacing crankshaft position sensor, let me know if you have any tips for this.

Thank you, this is very helpful. And thanks for not using any music. 😀

@tedlu008 says:

Nice video. Need such a long extension

@AgentFoxMulder1972 says:

hi, and thanks for the video… on the c320 it is harder to reach!

@Theundisputedtruth says:

Thanks mines say crankshaft circuit malfunction so probably a bad connection ? Instead of replacement ?

Will the engine run without the sensor wire ?

@reneefink3741 says:

Excellent diagnostic, All the information without extraneous noise music very concise.

@unfadeablecivic says:

My w210 is doing this but I have no check engine light on. Is it possible to get no codes and still have this sensor problem?

@rw7051 says:

I have mercedes gl350 diesel. jerky transmission when cold. p0336. FIXED. Best from underneath. TAke the plastic shield from below the transmission pan off, using 8mm wrench. Look above the starter and the LH fwd drive shaft and you'll see the plug on the driver side where the engine meets the transmission. It's at the 10 oclock position, just like on the Sprinter. I have a GL350,2013. crankshaft position sensor. metal shield over connector. use torx box end wrench. sep.3

@rw7051 says:

Sensor is $71 at dealer, aug. 2021.

Thanks Masood. Using your instructions I was able to switch out my CPS after getting code P0355. Using your socket extension idea I was able to replace it very quickly. Also, FYI for anyone doing this, I have a 2002 S500 and I bent the protective metal shield out of the way a bit to get better access. The new CPS (BOSCH) was too large so I used some sandpaper to reduce the profile so it would slide in. Also when installing the CPS, use a small piece of tape to secure the bolt to the socket so it doesn't drop out when screwing it back in.

@patioche says:

Yes you helped me. It happened to me this weekend..on my E320. Engine stopped while driving. Was not able to start. Then started after few minutes.
I found this code P0335 this sunday on my scanner. And so check the code then your video… Will take care of it tomorrow. Subscribed to your chanel before…
Thank you

This happened to me yesterday, except I was driving when it happened..I'm just happy I didn't crash the ol c55. Awesome video!

@nomebear says:

It's difficult to replace, especially if you might be a larger person. Buy a top brand replacement, because you don't want to replace it again.

@Mau105 says:

Great tutorial for common problem. After getting the sensor and setting up the needed tools my T8 female Torx will not fit on the CPS bolt and the T10 is too big. So had friend get another T8 from auto parts store.
Noticed that you are demonstrating removal of bolt turning ratchet clockwise. Is this backwards?

@Linkcel says:

is it possible to make the replacement of the part for the bottom of the car or only on top if you have access to it?

@Linkcel says:

Whats the part Number of the piece? Tks

@HollywoodHornet says:

Did you just assume that torx socket's gender?

@22hh2 says:

Can u help me I have samilar problem the car crank more than once but after that it works is it from crank sensor ??

@FoxJacker says:

High quality video and with all the detail, good job man! Thanks! 🙂

@ninjadarookie says:

do you know if this works for c320?

@gbush1620 says:

My W210 got the same problem recently, I follow your video and make the replacement and it's resume normal now. Many thanks!!
There's another (Front) crankshaft position right above the alternator (part # 0232103037 A0041536928), do you think we need to replace this too?
