Is it necessary to caulk around where the toilet meets the floor? Thanks

Oanh H Nguyen says:

I thought you have to install ring wax to toilet first.!

Doug Kyle says:

Hi Jeff,

Your videos are all great and much appreciated. With all due respect i would like to add a few comments.

1. The building inspectors here in California require the toilet bowl to be caulked at the base per code. This helps to secure it since floors and toilets are never perfectly flat. Plastic shims trimmed so they do not show and a neat clean caulking job keeps it from rocking and rolling. It also is more sanitary in case of overflow and bad aim….boys will be boys. No one wants a stinky rotten sub-floor or smell from under the toilet.

2. I now only use a mini hacksaw to cut the bolts since the hot sparks from my grinder left tiny marks on a toilet i installed in a rental apartment. I made the same mistake when grinding a metal bolt near a brand new window and the hot sparks hit the glass causing minor pits that could not be removed. If you use a grinder be careful. We all learn by our mistakes. Thanks again for your excellent videos.

Hi Jeff, I've watched so many of your videos and have learned a lot. I am a true DIYer and I have ran into an issue that I haven't seen you cover yet. I have a toilet that leaked at the tile and rotted the subfloor. During demolition, I have staggered the tile line, the Hardi-Backer, and the Subfloor inward toward the rotted area respectively so that no joints overlap one another.. When removing the tiles it took random layers of the Hardibacker and also left some of the thin set varying the working height to replace the tile.
Two questions:
Should I remove the patches of thin set or use them as the height of my base layer?
And how thick can you lay "Thin Set" to make up for the layer that lifted with the tile removal?
I wish I could send a picture that would depict what I am trying to say much more clearly.
Thank you for your guidance. Would LOVE to see a video on this.
Ken

Andrei Fasola says:

So there's nothing besides that pvc pipe fastening the toilet to the floor??? Now I know why mine squeaks. What about siliconing it to the floor like they do with sinks underneath the counter?

Andrei Fasola says:

The music works really good imo.

Matt says:

Awesome  videos.

J. J. G. says:

Great video. Except for the sound effects of your damn nostrils. Blow your nose please.

V for Victory says:

What about using sealing around it? Is it possible to use a new type of Ring instead of wax ring?

Michael Buono says:

I got some good tips here, thanks! Also notable: “rough-in” distance from wall. That could ruin your day

ikust007 says:

Jeff: I don’t understand: I not screwing the flange ??

Conqwiztadore22 says:

Awesome except for that sticker on the flange but prolly not a big deal since it won't be holding liquid

Robin Lee says:

For shark bite valve on copper juat push and install.

samous007 says:

After using the grinder, was there burnt marks left on the toilet?

home compter says:

what is the name of that tool you use at the 51 sec mark to cut the water line and use to cut shoe molding?

Iyaman Kultura says:

You did not remove the sticker price before you glue….hmmm

John Joyce says:

Thanks Jeff.
Appreciate your sense of humour and professionalism keep up the great work.

Mboowa Shafiq says:

Thanx the video was clear and direct to the point

David Xu says:

Install fail! It's not agaunst the wall and when people lean on the tank, the toilet will break.

Jo Dreadnought says:

Hi Jeff,
Any chance you have a wall mount toilet install in the works? Seems like a space saver and I’m working with a small bathroom remodel and interested in your thoughts.

yomero1978 says:

What would be best/ easier ? Copper compression fittings? Or PEX?

Alexander Klimantiris says:

Thank you for your awesome videos. Keep up the good work. (12:38 giving the finger!! 🙂 )

Rob Presario says:

Personally I put the plastic piece on first then the washer then the nut to tighten the toilet down before cutting the bolt and popping the cover cap on. I do it only because I am worried about the porcelain since I dont do this regularly I'm not 100% about what i can and cant do before breaking something.

Elvira Elfimova says:

I was able to install – based on this video. Thank you !

J L says:

I would have liked to see how you clamp the water line behind the wall, but good vid!! Also the silicone used between the floor and base of toilet.

MSS Bangla says:

Nice video good work

Brendon Huynh says:

Hackish work. You left the sticker on the toilet flange when you were gluing, so why glue it at all really? Using the angle grinder with a cutting disc is risky for cutting toilet bolts. I've seen the sparks from an angle grinder make grey marks all over a toilet before, likely due to excess heat. I'd rather use a hackzall or sawzall personally. Also it's good practice to make sure you're toilet sits level once bolted down.
