How To Change A Timing Belt In Your Car

cmiller8492 says:

are timing belts and serpentine belts the same thing?

gtr500able says:

thanks

ff5gus says:

2003 Lexus 3.0 liter. 124,000 miles. Timing chain or belt on this?

John Chambers says:

Thanks Scotty, much more difficult on the V6? I have this same car but the
V6 version. Have replaced the timing belt before but never the water pump
and I’d like to do it. The dumb dealership that did the timing belt didn’t
do the water pump like they should have.

none none says:

Great video and thanks for your straight to the point no nonsence approach
to replacing parts! Thanks again!

Sam Ibrahim says:

Damn plz come to my house and fix my car

Mike O says:

Yikes! Make sure you are TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke.
Follow all manufacture guidelines for timing component replacement
procedures! Single and Dual overhead cam engine timing marks can be
difficult to align without following proper procedures. Cam shafts are
likely to move dramatically once the timing belt is removed due to valve
spring and cylinder compression within stroke. Catastrophic engine damage
is likely to occur if the timing belt is not properly installed. Improper
removal of the timing belt can result in intake and exhaust valve damage in
one or more cylinders. This video is not for the inexperienced…stick with
your favorite complete repair manuals you DIY’ers!

Ivan Chu says:

I don’t have the guts to change the timing belt my self -_-

SMG010 says:

a few years ago, we worked on a v6 engine ( needed a new cylinderhead) and
when we put everything back on, then we got to the timing belt, everything
was smooth and we had no problem putting the timing belt on. and we also
did 2 revolutions to see if the (red) marks line up and it did and the belt
had good tention. we started the engine. it didn’t sound idle at all. after
2 days we have found out that the engine is so strong that the timing belt
slips an inch ( like 4 or 5 teeth) from the camshaft pulley.. it was a opel
vectra 2.5l automatic station by the way

Kao Vue says:

if you mark it, does that mean you dont have to put it on TDC?

AnythingLoud says:

I have a Mazda 6 with 223k miles on it and the timing chain has never been
changed. Is it a good idea to change it? I know timing chains last a lot
longer than timing belts but this chain has 223k miles on it

Jon Dizzoe says:

+Scotty Kilmer Awesome Vid! If you change the timing belt, would you
recommend also changing the water pump as well?

HALCONDEMETAL1974 says:

WHEN CHANGING A TIMING BELT,IT IS IMPORTANT TO TURN THE ENGINE ‘TWO
REVOLUTIONS??? HAS THIS BE DONE TO ADJUST THE TIMING BELT OR JUST TO MAKE
SURE THE TIMING BELT IS TURNING RIGHT???

Paul Fisher says:

Would it be easier on an Inline configuration engine compared to a V?

Matty Wollaston says:

Of course it’s meant to be amateurish Martin Thompson, as Scotty is
explaining to your average joe out there, not instructing a bunch of top
notch mechanics. I do all my own mechanical work and timing belts etc, and
found Scotty to be not only informative, but also fun to watch. Don’t go
hating on the man cause you couldn’t be bothered, or don’t know how to do
the work yourself. Good job Scotty, you’re the man.Oh and btw, it was paint
not tippex.

charlietow says:

Ooops, fan belts aren’t needed on this one. :-)

Felipe Alejandre says:

Hey Scotty, I’m about to do my timing belt and I’m also going to change the
seals. Would you recommend autozone seals? Do they last a long time? Thanks

MrGmfreak01 says:

Haha you went way too fast

techguy1678 says:

Isn’t finding the TDC necessary?

Aaron Taylor says:

not all belts come off by loosening the alternator and sliding it, some
have a tensioner that you can pull to one side and take tension off the
belts

renodeify says:

So why do mechanics charge so much for timing belt change?

Michael Edwards says:

The crank pulley nut wont come off :(

Christopher Hargreaves says:

Hey man, you probably should have explained that people need to check to
see if their car has free spinning pulleys or not

bloodcicon says:

i currently have a mazda 323 F (1992) driven 184500 KM so belt has probably
been changed around 2 times its lifetime and since the car is 22 years old
should the belt not be changed soon?

Martin Thomson says:

Folks dont do it this way. Its amatuerish. You dont use tippex-Ya do it
properly. Get all your car’s timing mark data online, get a proper guide &
do it that way. This way you’re only replacing the same old bad timing
issues your car is sure to have after years of stress etc on belt. I
expected more from you mate

Colina St. Fleur says:

Great video although I’m not sure i’d be able to do it myself on my 2003
chevy impala… but at least I can watch and ask questions when the
mechanic is doing it

Luh Tune says:

I LOVE THIS GUY!!!
