SAVING £400 – DIY Jaguar F Type Gearbox Fix!

SAVING £400 – DIY Jaguar F Type Gearbox Fix!

In this video I save £400 by doing a gearbox service myself on my Jaguar F Type. Originally had this job booked in at a quoted price of £650 but managed to do this myself for £270 all in.

How did you check the oil temperature?

@THA6reat1 says:

Great video bro/I have a quick question what was your reason for wanting to do your fluid change did you get any message saying that gearbox faulty/service? or was it just time?

@lucasdsampaio says:

Nice video!!! What tool did you use to check the oil temperature?

@AY11-JAY says:

Mate where do you get the flow chart to tell you the process of going through the gears once the cars at a certain temp, and how do you know the temp? Did you do this with the engine cold? Just about to do my v8 s/c xkr and im anxious as f#£k

The invention of the modern plastic (latex) glove dates to 1964, when the Ansell Rubber company manufactured the first disposable latex surgical gloves.

Great video! Maybe someone can help me. I have a 2018 F Type with 26K miles and noticed a low pitched hum, whirling, whining sound between 10-30 mph then as I accelerate it goes away and comes back again when I slow down to 10-30 mph. I have read in some forums that is a normal sound but wanted to make sure my car is not in need of a trans/diff flush?

@JetFire9 says:

I have done this job many times on the ZF in the Jags and Range Rover.

Not bad for first try. But few things:

1) You showed the instructions that said to torque the pan bolts in a crossing pattern, but you didn’t follow them and instead did the worst thing possible and went around in a circle. Definitely not right.

2) After initial fill and starting the car, immediately fill the trans again until it spills out before revving and running through the gears. Otherwise, you are doing that process very low on fluid and potentially sucking in air from the sump defeating the purpose of running through the gears.

3) You only changed 40% of the fluid. Not good. It’s easy to get the rest changed by bleeding the transmission the same way you bleed the brakes, except you start the car to bleed the fluid instead of pumping the brakes. Remove a hose connection from the external transmission cooler and extend a hose into a container. Fill the sump, start the car for 7 seconds to get a quart out. Refill a quart and repeat until at least 6 quarts are bleed out. Then you will have changed out 95-99% and actually did the job.

Your transmission fluid would look black as night right after only changing the 3.8 liters.

great video ,thanks for make it

@crp9985 says:

Yes that oil needed to be changed. Sorry AFT.

Hi ryan! thanks for uploading, do you have a link to the process chart you showed??

@papabash says:

Was the car level when you did the service ? i only saw ramps on the rear end and a trolley jack lowering the front end

Brilliant video

American reasonable Joe here. I did mine when I got it used. The process was hell of a pain and says it takes two people but I did it all by my lonesome.

It amazes me they cannot run a filler tube with a dipstick in cars anymore.

My 2017 V6 Premium was previously owned by someone in California and they neglected it. I have it running pretty good now..but occasionally the idle wants to drop to almost 690rpm like it wants to stahl but I don't know why.

No OBD errors, changes out the filters and the airflow pressure sensor and thought it fixed it but nope. I have a few videos myself. Just did my rear brakes.

@James_Simester says:

Hi Ryan. Great video! how did you measure the gearbox oil temperature was at the right level before the final fill up? Thanks

@bisonuberti says:

How were you going through your gears if you were on jack-stands? Did you keep your foot on the brake and just shifted the lever?

@jasonmorecroft7764 says:

Where did you order the kit from?

@dantuzzy says:

Hey Ryan. I'm a 15 year old from england who fell in love with f types a few months ago. My knowledge of servicing cars is obviously quite basic, but i was wondering, how much knowledge would i actually need to save myself some money by doing these kinds of things myself? Great video btw

Lovely cat. Excellent video.

@justingrainger6627 says:

Beautiful car.

@wealdtkd3559 says:

Looks like you used a proper lift to gain access – yet the end showed you lowering a jack. Not sure you have enough room to get under there without lifting it higher?

@stewartmoss5624 says:

Good work Ryan. My car is 10 years old too and due gearbox fluid change, it’s not a job I fancied tackling though! Though I have done the diff fluid myself already. How much £s was the pan and fluid?

@haydnd2764 says:

A friend of mine had a gearbox service on a XFR-S and has noticed improved m.p.g. , presumably the car is shifting up the gears that bit quicker.

@ChrisFEJackson says:

Nice work Ryan. One tip when doing any oil change, wear gloves buddy, you don't want that oil on your skin, especially if it is warm.
