Sometimes that top nut spins because the strut shaft will spin inside the strut,even if you leave spring pressure on it to start removing the nut.I take vise grips and wrap the jaws with clean duct tape and grab the shaft as tight as I can.This works well for installing also because it doesn’t mar the shaft
Be sure to use the new nut that comes with the new strut because the old nut isn’t always the same size.
