How To Remove Serpentine Belt Hyundai Sonata 6th Gen | Why Difficult, DIY How-To & ReInstall It Easy

In this video, young mechanic Aiman will explain why is it so hard to loosen the tensioner bolt in order to remove or replace the Serpentine Belt on a 6th Gen Hyundai Sonata. Generation 6 Hyundai Sonata includes model years from 2009 to 2014 but this video might be more practical and exclusive for a 2011 through 2013 model years. The main reason why it is so difficult to remove is not only because of the tight space but also because of the play on the spring of the tensioner which require a specific tool such as a zero offset wrench. Here’s what we recommended & the #ad link to buy:

You might be able to get away with using a shorter box wrench with about 5-10 degree offset but you will not be able to use the regular long slim serpentine belt removal tool even if you order the crow feet socket in 17mm and that’s because there’s too much play in the tensioner once you loosen it. The AC line and the metal frame in the engine compartment will block it from going down further thus preventing you from pulling out the tool.

In this video Aiman also showed you how the design of tensioner as well as its distance from the wheel well wall in other vehicles such as Honda Civic is different from Hyundai Sonata. He then went on to demonstrate how to physically remove the serpentine belt and how to re-install it. The process is much easier if the car is jacked up from the floor and to loosen the tensioner from underneath the car.

The clips are actually from separate full-length tutorial step-by-step videos on how to remove and replace the alternator on a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. If you are interested here are the links to those videos:

So what is zero degree offset wrenches? Most of the box wrenches are 15 degree offset. 0° offset allows for access in very spaces such as trying to loosen the tensioner on serpentine belt. That’s the main reason why we purchased this EZARX tools set.

We considered many other brands such as Genius, Capri, Dellihom, Bulltools, Horusdy, Gearwrench, Matcotools, Snap-On and a few others but based on the positive reviews on Amazon as well as price point considerations, we decided to go with EZARC Tools. Prices on the sets ranges from $40 to $130. We are also very interested in ICON brand ratcheting features from Harbor Freight Tools, but the prices are too steep at $180.

The best way is to cut the non 17mm box end off of the wrench making it about 4" shorter that eliminates the pinch point. That's what I did.
