Jaguar XF Gear Selector Fix: Save £80 with This Simple DIY Home Repair!

Jaguar XF Gear Selector Fix: Save £80 with This Simple DIY Home Repair!

In this video, I tackle a common and frustrating issue with the Jaguar XF: the Gear Selector Module (GSM) failure. If your gear knob rises but won’t let you shift out of Park, or if it’s stuck in gear, you don’t necessarily need to spend £80+ on a professional repair or hundreds on a new unit.
After diagnosing the fault code P176C in my previous video, I dive into the center console to find the culprit. It turns out many of these issues are caused by a simple “dry solder joint” on a specific resistor (R500) on the PCB.
Follow along as I show you:
✅ How to remove the center console and trim without breaking clips.
✅ How to access the GSM circuit board.
✅ Identifying the failed solder joint on the R500 resistor.
✅ Testing the fix and clearing the codes with the Kingbolen Ediag Elite.
Tools Used:
Torx drivers (T10, T15, T20, T25, T30)
Trim removal tools
USB Soldering Iron
Kingbolen Ediag Elite Scan Tool
If this video helps you save money on your Jag, please give it a thumbs up, subscribe to Projects in the Barn for more DIY car repairs, and hit the notification bell so you don’t miss the next update!

Ive just ordered one from ebay for my 2010 xf, i have just realised there are lots of different part numbers for the 2009 – 2012. But i guess they all fit……what do you think?

I have the same issue, it stays stuck in Drive and sometimes in Park. I’m going to follow your video and try it myself. I just can’t see whether you disconnected the battery when unplugging the wiring harness from the electronics.
Please let me know if you did this with the battery connected or disconnected.

Mine say r510 where that solder is all looks okay was stuck in reverse wouldn’t let the shifter sink and the car wouldn’t start

Excellent video, really enjoyed that

@cgwaltersmusic says:

Great video. Would be interesting to know why the R500 resistor becomes loose in the first place , Im assuming no battery disconnection is needed . Cheers

Enjoyed your video.

@stevenhares5188 says:

I had already removed it once before, but good to be reminded how to do it again. Mine was repaired by ECUTesting 4 years ago and they are more than happy to repair again under the lifetime warranty.

@robbogpz900 says:

I have this fault and can I just say your video is the most informative i can find on youtube. Thanks for being so open in showing each step in such detail.
I'm going to follow it to the letter when attempting the fix.
Well done fella!

I have just finished this repair following your video. I could not see a dry joint even with a magnifying glass. I decided to re solder the F150 anyway and hey presto the unit works again, fantastic. I only had one screw left over which was the one from under the cable release. Without this video I would not have attempted the repair, many thanks.
