I have owned hondas for a long time. Had a 87 two 95s and a 00 (known for
tranny failure). Let me give all of you odys owners some advice. Your cars
have a reputation for transmission failure. THe 6th gen accords and acuras
that use the same transmissions of that era also have a high transmission
failure rate. To prevent failure, I recommend that anybody who owns these
trannys
1. add a tranny cooler, it is very easy to do.
2. add an inline magnafine tranny filter
3. do a complete fluid change (not just the 3quarts) every year or 15k
miles, which ever comes first.
4. only use honda fluid no matter what people tell you.
To do a full flush, you
1.buy 8 quarts of honda fluid
2.drain out all of the fluid in the bottom of the tranny by taking off the
bolt.
3. after draining, add a whole gallon of new fluid to the fill hole.
4. open up the tranny cooler line and add a clear piece of 3/8 hose to the
hose that comes from the tranny cooler on the radiator (you will need a 3/8
coupler to join the two hoses together.
5. start the engine and let the tranny pump out 1 gallon through that hose
and into a empty gallon container.
6.VERY IMPORTANT: while it is pumping out the old fluid make sure you are
adding new fluid at the same time so it doesn’t run dry. If you see two
quarts come out , you should have put two quarts in. When the gallon jug is
full of old fluid you should have poured a whole gallon in. Next, take
another empty gallon jug and let the transmission pump old fluid into that
too while adding a second gallon of new fluid. When that jug is full, STOP!
you are done. You just pumped out two gallons and put in two new gallons.
Check your levels and then put the hose back on.
This will replace probably 95% of the fluid in the tranny. I do this every
year with all of my hondas. My 87 got 350k miles when i got rid of it and i
only got rid of it because of a broken fly wheel. Tranny was strong when i
JUNKED it.
These trannys have around 7 to 8 quarts so changing out 3 doesn’t do much.
You will be better off if you added an inline cooler and filter.
Also, many complain that the honda dw1 fluid gets dirty fast but if you
change it every 15k and add and inline filter, it will stay pretty clean
from change to change. When that fluid gets dirty, meaning, full of that
grey sludge that you see on the magnetic drain plug, it doesn’t work so
great and it can mess up your tranny so keep it changed often and use a
second filter to reduce that sludge. Also, stop complaining about the cost
of dw1 fluid. I buy 8 quarts for 65 bucks every time I go to the dealer and
65 bucks a year is not a lot to pay to keep your tranny running. When your
tranny breaks , you will wish you paid 65 a year to get it back. You will
feel stupid when you realized you could have saved yourself 1000 for a new
tranny. Most of you waste more than 65 a year buying premium gas that you
don’t need or injection cleaners that don’t work. Be wise.
A lot of youtube mechanics are saying that you are draining and adding 3
quarts of transmission fluid on a 2001 Honda Oddyssey. The Honda parts
counter told me I am draining and replacing 3.5 quartz, not 3 quarts. My
2003 Civic has a 3 quart transmission fluid change and my 2001 Oddyssey has
a 3.5 Quart transmission fluid change.
I believe the 2002 may be the first year there was an external filter for
the AT. Other information I have found says the filter was internal to the
transmission on the earlier models.
Is this really worth the trouble to do it yourself. I spend 90 dollars
at the local Honda dealership to do this for me every 30K miles. So
minus the 30 bucks for 3 quarts it’s 60 bucks. And I know it’s done right.
I’m totally for doing oil changes myself but tranny changes. Don’t think
it’s worth it.
I would have to assume you checked the tranny fluid level with the dipstick
as you we’re getting close to full, & final fluid level check as well.
Otherwise, very nice job – going to the trouble of videoing and posting
this. (didn’t see U do that in the video)
Thank you,Video was well done and very helpful.I have a 2000 odyssey the
tranny is at times jerking in 1st 2nd and reverse.Hope tranny isn’t
bad.Thanks again.Bill
i have a 2001 is it the same tranny also i just bought it and i cheaked the
fluid and its a tint red with no metal shavings showing on the rod you pill
to cheak fluids i dont no when they changed it last and im afraid if i di
it will cause me more problemsplease help me sir
You’re absolutely right. I always make sure I can refill the transmission
fluid oil (that is I’m able to open the fill port) before I go and drain
the old stuff out). May have been unlcear in the video. I’m glad you liked
it.
Honda recommends that owners do not flush their transmission as it might
damage something inside. Depending on the mileage I would drain and fill
every year for a higher mileage vehicle.
2005 Odessey takes 3.5 Quarts of trans fluid. You can also fill the fluid
through the dip stick tube provided you buy a hose thin enough to fit in
the small dip stick hole. You then need to adapt the hose to a funnel.
After you changed it are you certain you added enough oil? With the vehicle
running, and holding your foot on the brake don’t let it move. Cycle it
thru each of the gears then stopping back in park. With it still running go
and remove the transmission oil dipstick and make sure it above the level.
The only time I have ever had issue with a transmission not engaging after
a fluid drain and fill was it actually wasn’t full.
Have your transmission had any problems after you change the fluid..try to
do it on mines 01 ex with 170k miles..the fluid smells like burn..took it
to a mechanic n told me sometimes when you change the fluid to this odyssey
the transmission be having problems..let me know please

It has been a long time since I have done any fluid changes on my car

your tranny probably gave out right
Very Good Video Thank You
hey man, nice video
quick question, i am about to change it on my ODY
but, you do not mention a filter ??
is there no filter in this type ??
I believe the 2002 may be the first year there was an external filter for
the AT. Other information I have found says the filter was internal to the
transmission on the earlier models.
Thanks a lot!!!
that fluid look like it needed to be channge.
I bet you after that tranny fluid change you trany started skipping and
went on you
Would this be similar for an 2004 Honda Odyssey?

Nice & easy thx
Good video thank you
Great video! Clean those battery terminals!!!!!!!!!!

No problems with the transmission. We did get in a subsequent accident so
the car has been sold to a salvage place. Good luck and thx for watching.
Drain and replace is fine unless there is reason to believe you’ve got some
build up in tranny.
Can you tell me what brand of wrench you were using in the video that has
the sliding handle? It looks very handy.
Thank you,Video was well done and very helpful.I have a 2000 odyssey the

Thanks friend, helped me change the oil as transmicion my Odyssey EX 2000
and doubts I had.
Your owners manual should specify suitable alternatives. Thx for watching.
do these vans have transmissions problems??

Are you sure 3 quart new fluid should enough ?
Thabks for the video
Thank a million sir! Are you familiar with changing the AT filter?
how many miles were on ut when you changed the fluid?
Honda recommends that owners do not flush their transmission as it might

Capacity is actually 3.1 quarts….
Don’t flush. Only drain and fill. Unless an authorized dealer/mechanic say
so.
great video! very detailed. Thanks!
