I did the rear tank on my ’85 F250 a week ago. It was a pain in the butt. I hate those nylon fuel lines! The return line kinked on me as I wrestled with it. It hasn’t leaked…yet. The only way to secure the filler hose to the tank was to snake a long 1/4″ extension with a u-joint and 5/16″ socket to the clamp through a hole in the frame. Just an FYI if anyone else out there attempts this job.

AirtexFuelPumps says:

Over time contaminants can build up inside of the fuel tank. These can be introduced from outside from filling the tank up over the years or can be from the tank rusting on the inside. If these are not removed this will shorten the life of the fuel pump. Often the reason for the original fuel pump failure is due to contamination. If you take out the old fuel pump and the strainer is brown/black, it’s a sure sign there is contamination in the tank and must be cleaned. Thanks for watching!

T1av1s says:

Why do you have to clean the inside?

AirtexFuelPumps says:

Taking the bed off is another way of changing the pump. The problem with this method is you have to have a few buddies over to help as the beds are quite heavy. Then this also does not allow you to clean the inside of the fuel tank as the tank is still mounted in the truck. If you do it this way makes sure to pay close attention to the condition of the inside of the fuel tank. You may still have to take it off & clean it if it is contaminated on the inside. Thanks for watching!

Mike Hunt says:

wouldnt it make it alot easier to just take the bed off

Thankyou, my factory pump sends fuel but the guage isn’t working. cleaned contacts ,but worked for a day.

AirtexFuelPumps says:

Hello: Yes, you are correct. The yellow wire is the signal wire to the fuel gauge. Thanks for watching!

amurican35 says:

Was wondering which wire from the harness sends the float info to the guage? I see on the video that the wire leading from the float itself is yellow. I would assume the harness info wire is yellow, but i wanted to ask a pro.

AirtexFuelPumps says:

Hello: Yes, you will need to purchase all of the needed components from a donor truck. You would need the crossmember, straps, lines, etc. You will also need to add a switch in the cab & the wiring to be able to switch at the tank. This will be quite a bit of work, but it can be done. If you get in to any trouble on the job, don’t hesitate to call our free tech line: 800-424-7839. Thanks for watching!

Are you blind or just rude? Quit typing in call caps and typing multiple question marks. It’s RUDE!!!!!

WELL THOSE ANSWERS DIDN’T WORK, COME TO FIND OUT THE NEW FUEL PUMP i PURCHASE WAS DEFECTED, i REINSTALLED NEW FUEL PUMP TRUCK WORKS GREAT,,, SO IT WASN’T ELECTRICIAL OR WIRING, JUST THE FUEL PUMP,,,

AirtexFuelPumps says:

Could be a few things. There may be a bad connection on the wires of the sending unit, or a bad wire or not connected at all. Reference the video between 3:17 – 3:35. Often times the connector pins on these trucks can go bad, which would also cause your problem (which also might be part of your other larger issue). The best thing would be to call our Tech Support Line, 800-424-7839 and they can walk you through the diagnosis. Then you’ll know for sure what it is & how to take care of it. Thanks

damon gonzales says:

ANOTHER QUESTION?? WHY AFTER i INSTALLED THE FUEL PUMP THE GAS GUAGE READS FULL AND WON’T MOVE???

AirtexFuelPumps says:

Sorry to hear about your issue. Sounds like you have a possible electrical issue. We would recommend checking power and ground. Watch our “How to Test for Fuel Pump Voltage Drop” video for how to perform this diagnostic check. Sounds like there is a bad/loose connection, which typically causes an issue after heating up and running a short time (like your case seems to be doing). If you need further help, please call our free tech support line, 800-424-7839. They’ll walk you through everything.

I wish my mechanic only took 6 minutes to do this job like the video.
At least now I know how the spare tire holder works!
