thanks for the upload…Now, do i have solenoid problem? My 1994 dodge ram
3500 4×4 cummins wont start and but if i forced it to start i felt that i
dont have same power before. the truck only have 45k miles….or it can be
fuel pump? thanks

@rafael55 You cant go wrong with a cummins. Take note though that you will
want to do as much work yourself that you can because shops will rape you
on parts and labor. Parts are expensive for these so be ready to throw some
money into it.

@95dgediesel posibly the resistor.. idk about your particular model, its
something you could check up on. there is a resistor inline with the cold
start valve and the fuel shutoff valve which is set to 3ohm. in which case
a 10 volt supply is yielded to the seleniod. had a similar problem with
mine and it turns out that i fried the shutoff seleniod the very first
start after i had just put the new on in… naturally wasnt a good moment
for me… hope it helps

1994-96 & 12valves seem to be more reliable in my opinion. Maintain your
vehicle!-change oil(I use Castrol 20/50), filters, a good fuel additive-I
have hit 260,000 miles on my truck and it runs better today than ever
before.Just to reference my Dodge is a 95 2500 4X4, Cummins turbo, 4″ lift,
35″ tires, K & N filter, replaced very few parts on the motor itself,
replaced the transmission.Read those truckforums on the net,many owners
offer helpful insight that allow you to find your right truck.

Thanks so much for the vid. I have the same truck you do, 1994. Today my
solenoid burned up, and created a lot of smoke. I was leaving autozone when
it happened of all places. I got the solenoid off went into autozone but
they didn’t have the part in stock. I already replaced the relay once, I
will take it off the truck and test it. I am starting to think there might
be a problem with my ignition, solenoid burning up and almost catching fire
like that doesn’t seem normal at all.

your videos are really helpful. i have a question, 1997 Ram with Cummings
5.9. The 20 amp fuel pump fuse keeps burning out. the truck will still run,
but with little power . i replaced the contacts in starter solenoid and
still have the problem. can i defective fuel shut off do this also? i am in
the middle of tracing the wiring,when i replaced the contacts on starter,
the heavy insulated wire between the solenoid and starter body was melted.
any help woud be appreciated

Similar looking solonoid design on my carburetor. Shits backfiring like a
bitch when i let off the gas, and im gettin horrible gas mileage and what
looks like to me blueish smoke out the exhaust that i think is unburnt gas.

raw fuel or coolant/water

Check all fuses – which are located under the hood on the drivers side,
normally all those big fuses. Check your ignition – I’ve replaced my
steering column twice and I replaced my ignition three times. The first
time I thought the solenoid went out it turned out to be the ignition. You
can get the ignition at CarQuest for about $60. But more than likely you
will change it out every few years, I’d go to eBay and find a OEM product
as far as ignition parts. Start with that – let me know.

tons of useful info in that book with photos as well.

After your engine is warmed up, disconnect the choke linkage, wire the
choke open, drive it down the road, if it doesn’t backfire then its is your
electric or manual choke…

Very informative video. Now, is that my problem? Truck will crank and
crank, but it will not fire. I have 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 cummins. Yesterday
on Friday I tried to start it probably 20 times with 1 successful start and
1 almost successful start. Even after having the block heater lugged in for
4 hours it still wouldn’t start. As I seen asked before, someone asked if
it was a fuel pump and I’m hoping it’s not that or even my injector pump.
What do you suspect?

I sunk my truck in a mud hole and even after a full transmission flush by
the mechanic it still slips a bit and doesn’t shift into 5th. Could this be
my problem?

how does the solenoid hold terminal know if the engine is running? if key
is on but engine isn’t running doesn’t solenoid open??

If the solenoid lever is not engaged all the way you will have a lack of
power. And if you do change the solenoid make sure you change the relay as
well. When you buy a new solenoid it actually has an “adjustment” on it, it
should be adjusted from factory but sometimes it is not. If you try that
and it doesn’t have power, change your fuel filter, and I recommend a
diesel fuel additive. It could be the fuel pump, but when fuel pumps quit –
they quit – or leak fuel and don’t work at all.

EHOW website states “the solenoid acts as a relay, bringing metal contacts
into place to close a circuit. It receives a small electric current when
the car’s ignition is activated-turn of the key. The magnetic field of the
solenoid pulls on the contacts closing the circuit between the car’s
battery & the starter motor. The solenoid needs a constant flow of
electricity in order to maintain the circuit but because the engine is
self-powering once started the solenoid is inactive most of the time.”
