How To Install Slip on Rockers, 2001 Silverado

With this video, I switch gears a bit from home repair to vehicle repair. It certainly qualifies as a DIY project. I attempted to make this to the point and as short as possible and still convey a good description of how I moved through the installation of slip on rocker panels on my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. Slip on panels are manufactured to be applied over the existing rusted out areas. As explained in the video, there are several way to attach these panels. I did purchase a flux core welder specifically for the project, and even with that expense feel that I am well below what it would have cost to have a professional do the work. As close I can figure, I have about $300.00 in the project. This includes the welder. I suspect that it would cost that much for just one side if I had paid a professional. Allow me to do some clarification on welders. A professional will always choose a MIG over a flux core welder. As I mentioned in a previous post my first welder was a Millermatic loaded with .023 wire and Argon/CO2 gas. However, I am retired and may not ever use this flux core welder again. By my using plug welds, it cut down on the amount of heat and there was absolutely no warpage. The welds were certainly not the professional quality I would have gotten from a proper MIG but it suited me just fine. So if you're a young fellow and thinking about doing some body work or a restoration, spend the money and buy a MIG.

Looked good. I think I would have simply ground the heads of the screws down as opposed to removing them and used body filler blended across the entire welded area. In the end, it's how everything turned out that's important 🙂

I LOVE ❤❤❤ Detroit Brands. That being said, I think it's A CRIME that GM, Ford and Chrysler sheetmetal and/or paint doesn't hold up nearly as well as that from- yep, you guessed it-Toyota and Honda. WHY do Detroit Brands CONTINUE to ignore this??? I live in the Rust Belt, and I hate to say it, but I see Toyota Tundras from around 2000 that are nearly/completely rust free, while the Siverados, F-150s, and Dodge/RAM Pickups from the same time-period don't seem to fare NEARLY as well. OBVIOUSLY, I see BOATLOADS more of the Detroit-Badged trucks, and the older ones aren't ALL in bad shape. But the limited number of Tundras that I DO see tend to be in very good or excellent shape. Perhaps some of the Tundras were repaired, and no doubt some of the older Detroit Pickups as well. I just think it's BULLSHIT that GM, Ford and Chrysler REFUSE to use production methods/quality materials that result in a vehicle LOOKING GREAT for 20 years or so. I know F-150 is Aluminum now, and we'll see how that goes. But as far as I'M concerned, GM, Ford and Chrysler need to RESOLVE these issues-at LONG LAST-or they are putting their ASSES ON THE LINE to be "one-upped"/OUTSOLD(!!!) in the Full-size Pickup Sector. If Detroit LOSES this Sector of the American Market, they can pretty much KISS THEIR OWN ASSES GOODBYE.

I would have used a combination of some plug welds and a Panel bond adhesive like 3M or Fuser

Body Shops in the Chicago area won't even do rust repairs anymore. Neighbor wanted some patch panels put on a 2003 Ford Cargo van. 6 body shops said no, buy a new van. A friends 99 Buick rockers are completely gone and three shops he went to said forget it…..
