Mrajd1982 Try to put it into 4Lo with the engine turned off but with the key turned to the run position and if it goes into 4Lo try starting it to make sure that the 4Lo is working if its working i wouldn’t worry about it my truck has been doing this for about 6 years

1aauto says:

You may want to inspect the gears in the transfer case. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

MrAjd1982 says:

my 2005 tahoe makes a loud clang clang sound, it goes into 4 HI and AUTO 4WD fine, only makes this sound when i try to go to 4 LO and will not go into 4 LO, any ideas?????

1aauto says:

You may want to check the vacuum lines to see if any of them need to be replaced. You can also see if there’s power going to the actuator with a test light or an ohm meter. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

I have an 02 GMC Sanoma ZR2 and when i push the button to put it in 4×4 it doesnt sound like it engages all the way. The light tells me it is in 4×4 but my front tires still wont spin. Hoping you can tell me what the issue would be.

Thanks, Caleb

You may want to inspect the gears on the transfer case to see if they are okay. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Josh Lusk says:

I have an 04 yukon that occasionally while driving down the road it will go into neutral and will only in gauge into any gear if you switch to 4hi. Do you think it could be the switch or motor?

RyanBurke says:

I was stuck in 4HI when mine stopped working. Had to replace 4×4 shift motor (mates with transfer case), 4×4 module (signaled by clicking sound under glove compartment in passenger wall) , and then the lights just blinked and I had to replace the 4×4 actuator (under the battery)
.
moral of the story… don’t wait to fix it.

Thank you for the informative video but I would certainly clean the driveshaft yoke with a solvent after dropping it on the dirty, rusted crossmember. I would also solvent clean the U-joint stub. Depending on the mileage of the vehicle I would tend to want to solvent clean all of the grease out of both U-joint caps and repack the bearings. Not too much work since it’s all apart already. My truck was giving erratic 4HI to LO shifts for about a year and now it’s stuck in low so I think it’s time.

Steven Cuttic says:

Since you’re dropping the front drive shaft, it’d be a good time to switch out the u-joints if they haven’t been done before. I’ve done my rear about 3 or 4 times in my 04 silverado but never the front. Maybe on a rainy day. Thanks for the video. I may replace my motor this summer or just pick up a spare just in case.

Joseph E. Ryan says:

wow what a job ahead I have coming up. Now I know why my truck wont go into 2hi and 2low Thanks Mike for the videos I am learning a lot.

1aauto says:

It might be an issue with the transfer case motor.

rbrix1972 says:

my truck is doing the same thing, but it goes into 4 high, but not 4 low. do I need to replace the shift case motor?

James Speed says:

Hi Mike, I have a 1999 Chevy Blazer that will not fully engage to 4wd the back tires engage but front ones don’t I have a video at night (sorry) of the lights/clicks from xfer case to cpu that it does. Only 2wd works/ stay solid but all others blink. I replaced the control module and vacuum hoses and vacuum switch (its on firewall) all new too. I was hoping I could get some insight from you. youtube.com/watch?v=InkgVSaYbPo

Dustin Fancher says:

Nevermind about the 4-Lo issue. I should read my manual! I need to be in neutral to engage. Never had a 4×4 before! Still have the turning issue.

Dustin Fancher says:

Great video! I just got my 02 Silverado. When I turn very sharp, I hear a rubbing/grinding noise, and sometimes the truck bounces a little. I can hear my shift motor working seemingly normal when I shift into 4-Hi. When I drive in 4-Hi I it feels a bit rough and like there’s a rubbing/grinding noise. I cannot shift into 4-Lo. Everything else about the truck seems great! My uncle, who lives in a different city and used to be a mechanic, thinks like the turning issue may be 4×4 related. Thoughts?

1aauto says:

The issue could be with one of the forks inside the transfer case not engaging all the way and what you are hearing is gear on gear contact. You will definitely want to bring it in and have it checked out before you use the 4×4 anymore.

mxrcody says:

I have a lifted 04 z71 and it will go into 4wd but when i move it makes a rattling noise kinda like a tin can hitting a rotating object. I have checked underneath and the noise is coming from inside the transfer case. Do you think its the motor is not engaging all the way or the actual transfer case is bad ?

Allan McCombs says:

Thanks for the video. My local professional wanted $500 for the motor, your site has it
for ~$163. They also wanted 3 hours in labor costs and your video is 15 minutes, but with fast forwarding of the movie, you might have had the truck on the lift for 45 minutes. Unfortunately it is hard to find an honest mechanic these days.

andrew jimenez says:

i have a 1994 chevy 1500 i have it in 2 high but it wont let me drive it will only go in reverse and 2 and 1 gear but when im go out of 2 gear and kick it into drive it will let me drive but when i stop i have to put it back into 2 gear to go again
i need help on finding out what i need to fix it

1aauto says:

It could be either the switch, transfer case shift motor or the physical transfer case is broken. You might want to bring it to someone to have them diagnose the issue for you.

Alex Heinen says:

I have pretty much the same truck, with a slight different problem. Everytime I click the buttons to swap to 4low or any other mode, nothing happens at all. No lights blink. No sounds are made. Any ideas whats wrong?

1aauto says:

It could be, you may want to test the power to the switch with a test light or an ohm meter.

Steves Beez says:

Hi Mike I don’t hear anything could it be the switch? Thanks

Steves Beez says:

Great that you show diagnostics. That way you can tell if it is the switch or the motor, nice video Mike

1aauto says:

Try to put the truck in reverse and back down the road a little ways. Sometimes this will disengauge the system for you.

1aauto says:

If you had a donor truck to take all of the parts from that would probably be the cheapest and easiest way to do this. It may be quite a bit of work though.

1aauto says:

It’s not that bad of a job if you take your time. Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
