2001 Buick Century Custom

My 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic is having some electrical system trouble. Since it’s been so cold and disagreeable lately, I took the easy if expensive w…

I currently own a gold 2002 buick century custom. Has a generous amount of
options like this one, bought it for 1400 bucks. The bodys nice besides the
rocker panels which are completely gone on mine, but it has 250,000 so its
expected. But i’m happy with it. Just needs alittle tlc. But my favorites
are the CD/cassette combo radio and the reading lamps with the dome lamp. I
plan on upgradi g to a limited sometime.

Wayne Buffin says:

hey bill cool video a friend of mine had one he says it was all kinds of
problems with it..i have a 1995 buick century with a 3.1 that thing drives
great real good on gas just hate the way the battery sits….original motor
and transmission when I got it the odometer read 92.046 just rebuild the
transmission gonna rebuild the motor bought it off a guy on craigslist for
1000 hit also has cruise /traction control….

B. Eder says:

This is a great 2nd owner car. Fast! 200 HP v6. You can get a good deal.

Samthebam4044 says:

That’s interesting the window sticker says the 3.1 V6 is a no charge
feature, wonder if that meant there was other engines available, or if the
car originally had a bigger or smaller engine with a free up-or downgrade
to this engine. I’d have thought they’d have put the engine and gearbox it
has at the top of the description, funny , also see it has your pet hate he
tyre pressure monitor circuit Haha, bet that caught your attention, nice
car William, seems to have a lot of nice things for such an affordable car,
padded doors, nice seats, a rather full-featured set of instruments,
cruise, ABS, electric windows and seats, air-con, airbags ,traction
control, and a nice radio, really quite amazed how much that’s got for that
sorta money, here in Britain you’d be hard-pressed to get half that for
that price, although we’re working in different money, $20k is about £40k
so it isn’t all that cheap but in 2001 it would be more like £30k so not
bad value at all, I’d have a car like that if I could drive and had good
enough eyesight.

irish89055 says:

One of the floor mats…? Doesn’t seem to be much difference between the
99-01 Centuries…. .

chanceiw5 says:

I had a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville ssei with the 3.8l supercharged series 2 v6
it was pretty quick and it had the feature where if the doors are closed
and you shut the car off and pull the key out the radio kept playing our
malibu has it also

theedrstrangelove says:

The service engine soon light is a redundant warning encase the obd
triggers a check engine light while operating the car and the problem
resolves itself and the check engine light goes out. I hope that makes
sense. I don’t think GM does this any more.

Robert Davis says:

Our family has a 2001 century exactly like this down to the
exterior/interior colors, mechanically sound but everything around it is
falling apart, oh well

Save Graves says:

I recently acquired 2001 Buick Century Custom. I loved it but now it’s
dead. Starter it seems. And so it begins

robbcrx says:

CANADA FTW !

ATCRyderX© says:

Great cars but such retarded Heat Controls on these. “BI-LEV, HTR, BLEND”.
lol ridiculous.

ElectronikHeart says:

Ignoring this mess ?!

Impossible ! There is always something interesting in your “mess” ! It’s
like a game where one should try to identify everything by the small bits
of it that sticks out ^^

Some mess and it’s some more free entertainment for us ^^

KLM817 says:

The Service Vehicle Soon light is a diagnostic for the body control
computer. Most GM’s of that era used a separate light for the body module.
The Service Engine Soon light is emission related.

fanowner12 says:

When we take our cars in, we usually get rentals from Enterprise. My work,
which is a car dealer, just put aside a few Dodge Darts aside out of their
inventory for loaners, and they have a few Caravans and Stratuses (Dodges).
When my parents used to take their BMW to the BMW dealer, we got newer BMWs
for loaners. A Jeep dealer that we used to take my parent’s Jeep to before
we started servicing it ourselves once gave us an Oldsmobile Alero and once
a Cadillac Seville STS with every option!

Backseatdriver001 says:

I just bought a 98 century custom, it has 90,000 miles and I love it!

WhoSaidTyler says:

That’s actually the same car as the ’97-03 Buick Regal, just de-contented
and some styling differences. I had a 1999 Supercharged Regal, and it ran
pretty strong, but not measurably faster than a Bonneville.

I’m sorry you are having electrical problems with your truck, but that’s
what ended up steering me back to Honda’s and Toyota’s. Every Gm I’ve ever
owned between 1997-2002 has had the same kind of electrical problems, window
regulator problems, climate control problems. The Regal had all those and
it was a one-owner with 78,000 on it. My current car is an ’00 Accord with
237,000 on it and it’s never had those kind of issues.

ju s says:

I think only the Regals came with the 3.8 /3.8 supercharged 🙂

vwestlife says:

FYI: Your annotation about the pulley is staying on too long. Probably you
encountered the same glitch I just did, where the annotation defaulted to
staying on for 1 minute instead of the usual 5 or 10 seconds. And you are
possibly the youngest person ever to drive a Buick Century. :-)

Mytechtime says:

Maybe the service vehicle soon light is for things like brakes and tire
pressure, etc.

JohnWayne Lustbug says:

I’ve had a few buicks (lesabre, park avenue, and electra) but the trans in
those cars are crap. Apart from the park avenue having trans issues towards
the end of having it and then i gave it to a family and then the engine
started knocking (it didnt help that their son beat the living snot out of
it). they parked went into a store, came back out, then click click , yep
you guessed it, engine locked up. After that i had a few tauruses (they are
shit with the strut issues) and my green 1997 had a transmission issue (a
flush and filter change fixed it, then it started messing up again). the
silver 2002 taurus i had was a good car except the strut decided to put the
spring thru the tire which made the car undriveable.. had to be towed and
put new struts on the front. (issue with the taurus). I eventually got the
Towncar, and I love it.)

Darrell Hylton says:

the newer cars has so much fricken plastic interior I refer to it as
Rubbermaid interior lol

Rtvoll says:

I drove a 98 regal a couple weeks ago (Same car as this as far as I know)
only it had the supercharged 3.8 and that thing hauled! The way it pushes
you back in the seat is just awesome.

dreamtheater1351 says:

That’s a really nice car! That’s not too low of mileage, my 03 police Crown
Vic had 83,000 when I bought it and my ’95 Mercury Tracer had 98,000 when I
bought that.

rdbagaming says:

build in Ontario Canada lol

That guy named ben says:

lol it was built in the south plant in Oshawa, I used to live there last GM
plant in the city.

ThePowerMacGalaxy says:

Speaking of a 3800 Super Charged, that’s what I’m after! Wanting a later
90s Bonneville somewhat similar to the KeyKeeper’s.

compdude512 says:

I think I’ve mentioned before that my grandpa drives a ’99 Century Custom.
If you think this car is stripped down, you should see his. The only
“upgrade” the original owner gave to the interior of the car was an AM/FM
stereo with tape deck and dual-zone climate control, and that might have
been standard equipment as far as I know.

I still remember the day we got that car. He traded in his 1991 Buick
LeSabre Custom (robin’s egg blue with navy cloth interior, 3800
fuel-injected V6, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 101k miles) and
bought his Century used in July 2002 for $10,995. It barely had 11k miles
on it at the time. Now it’s inching closer to 150k. I’m pretty sure it has
the same 3.1 engine as this car.

I can definitely see some of the changes they made between 1999 and 2001.
That rear seat release and child seat anchor were either options for the
1999 model year or hadn’t been offered yet. The climate controls look
different, and the glove compartment hydraulics were definitely improved to
be smoother. Oh…and the cup holder being integrated into the armrest was
a GREAT decision, considering GM’s original design for that was, to be
charitable, pure crap. (Ours broke long ago without much effort at all,
that’s how crap it was!) Other than that, that car looks just like a ’99 on
the inside.

The car rides fine, but it could be better. Our roads around here can get
pretty rough, and you can feel every bump. The road noise is also REALLY
loud for some reason. The ’91 LeSabre was definitely quieter, I can say
that much.

jefferyb304 says:

my mothers 2001 Olds Alero had the service vehicle and service engine soon
light. I think the vehicle light would come on if their was some sort of
nominal failure like the traction control system would go out. I also think
there could be confusion between the two lights. I was borrowing that car
one time, I heard ding ding ding, and about 3 or more lights came on. It
scared the you know what out of me when that happened. On my moms 2010
Camry, If some little issue like an oil change is needed, you hear a soft
ding and a light saying maintenance required comes on.

KLM817 says:

Nice Buick. I am wondering why a dealership loaner car would be so old.
Most places use cars no older than 2 or 3 years old. But regardless, it’s
still better than walking.

Mark Schommer says:

I had a 1984 Buick Park Avenue that had the cruise control indicator.
Neither of my 2 B-bodies have an indicator though. My 2008 Impala does
where the 2005 Equinox I had didn’t have the indicator.

Glockenator says:

I’ve got the same car, but in nowhere near as nice of shape. My rockers are
pretty rotten, the gas gauge is fucked and it has wicked lifter tick but
other than the occasional rough start it’s still a beautiful
car…especially for $1000.

MAG315 says:

Those aren’t bad little cars at all if you’re not looking for anything
fancy. Boring as hell but they beat walking for sure.

LOLZpersonok says:

I actually have a similar Buick Century, mine’s just a year older.

SJSharkWannabe says:

To say GM was selective on what cars got the Cruise light is a big
understatement, my Papa’s ’92 Roadmaster came with it (surprises me still
that your Caprice doesn’t have one) & my family’s ’02 Avalanche had it.

88ariesk says:

You do realize GM always engineers trouble and strife into all of their
designs. Also, if the part comes out without a hitch, the car will
reconfigure itself so it will not go back in later.

matmroy says:

Very nice car. I own a 2003 Buick Lesabre that is very similarly equipped.
My next car will defiantly be a Buick.

Steven Lebbing says:

Nice car so i guest the dealership does not have bread new cars for loner
cars i guest?

bluebirdvision says:

I have Retained Accessory Power on my 99 Regal

egn83b says:

The quality of america made GM products is laughable at best. The reality
is engineers today are pushed to the brink to just get basic drawings and
designs out the door to the production floor with just to meet demands.
That means you get a good enough engineered item meaning it has a sooner
then expect break down period but when time and quality are taken you get
something great that lasts forever and is admired but this car is just
another box on wheels with a good engine a dime a dozen. I drive honda’s
yes roller skates as you call them, they are in the same boat as this car
but the only difference is that the interior components will out last the
exterior along with the engine but they have their lemons too just like
GM.

TheEPROM9 says:

Love how you refer to that car as a small car, V8 V6 engines only exists in
racing cars over here. Small cars are very popular in sunny old England due
to fuel prices.

511sea says:

I had one of these and a LeSabre. Both where really good cars, nice riding,
the century handled better than the Lesabre. I live in a hilly area and was
constantly having rotors resurfaced

Js44047 says:

Great Video, Same motor my moms 95 lumina had traded it in 2005 for an
impala possible blown intake or head gaskets. The temperature hand kept
going to 260, The air conditioner still was just as cold as when they
bought the car in 1996 programmed car.

zx8401ztv says:

Looks very nice for a basic model bill, sometimes simple is better 🙂

Less knobs and whistles = less to go wrong 🙂

I didnt think it looked old at all, and the colour to me looked like a dark
grey, still looked nice dispite the format conversion errors :-))

Hope you had a nice xmas day, and didnt get too stuffed with turkey ha ha
:-))

HamburgerExplosion says:

I’m pretty sure the “service required soon” light is a reminder to service
your vehicle periodically at certain mileages.

loomieD91 says:

Very nice no rust that good for a 12 year old Illinois car my girlfriend
had a 1999 Buick century that has rust all over and it a Illinois car I’m
very surprised

yorgle11 says:

My guess is the “service Vehicle soon” light might just cover everything
that doesn’t fall under the government mandated “service Engine soon”
light. As you probably know, the functions of the SES light are EPA
regulated and it would be a legal pain for vehicle owners if that light
came on any more easily than it already does. So for non-EPA issues, GM
added their own separate “SVS” light.
There might be some models with separate lights for specific issues, but in
this case SVS might just cover all detectable faults.

I’ve always liked those 60V6 engines. I had probably a dozen different
encounters with those engines on various test drives and whatnot, but it
wasn’t until almost 15 years later that I finally bought a car containing
one (an older variant than this car). People regard it as outdated today
but I still love it.

97bonneville says:

I have a 2001 Buick Regal LS which is kind of the “big brother” of the
Century. The “Service Vehicle Soon” light is for the chassis electrical
system. I had a wheel bearing on mine go bad and that particular light will
light up as well as the traction control and the ABS lights.

keri ellerbe says:

That light means if any head light or day time running light go out that
light will come on..
