Have you ever come across a deal on a late model BMW that just needs a little work? Maybe it just misfires, or rattles, or has a check engine light. If it has the infamous N63 engine, you want to keep on scrolling. The cars these engines come in are very nice, and seemingly cheap! There’s a reason. The first iteration of N63 Hot-V Twin turbo V8 engines are wildly problematic, and incredibly labor intensive to repair or replace. You can find these engines in the 550i, 650i, 750i and Li, X5 and X6. While very powerful, most of these engines need replacement or major repair by 100k miles. Even with the most perfect of maintenance, they will still leave their owners stranded and footing a large repair bill.
From timing chain guide failure, misfires, injector problems, valve guide seals, rod bearing failure from oil starvation, vacuum diaphragm and line leaks, coolant leaks, oil leaks from the feed line blocks… there’s a reason replacement engines are $4k for a brand new one! BMW knows these aren’t reliable so they sell each new engine at a LOSS.
The previous owner of this car, a small dealer, deemed it not worth fixing and sold it to us for parts.

I just got a 2020 X5 M50i I’m going to be doing preventative maintenance on it this weekend. It’s only got 60k on it and it’s a really nice ride.
you know what bmw stands for dont you? BIG MONEY WASTE , il stay with toyota and lexus
But it’s a bmw an they drive like no other lol
I miss the v12 750.
Envelopes and bags full of money what about the ones with the inline 6 forget it cuz I'll slush boxes no fun to drive looking at Porsche Cayman
You could always buy one of these and park it in front of your house for uneducated random passer-by people to stare at so that they think you're rich 😀
I'd do it!
I hate BMW for putting the timing chain on the back of their best (and semi reliable) engine – the inline 6.
Imagine being a Bimmer lover and buying your new 2012 BMW for $75k. You get your oil changed regularly, rotate the tires, get the new cabin filters etc only to find out your $75k car isn't worth $1k after 6 years and 100k miles. Your neighbor bought a nice Camry for $25k at the same time and after 6 years and 100k miles it is still worth $10k and will run another 6 years.
was almost thinking of buying an n63 but strayed away
I get the feeling we'll see that engine on the butcher's block soon.
Turn the broken big bmws into sleeping space for the homeless
The more complicated a girl gets the more problems she will give yah
nice to see the us getting the junk engines 😀 greets from ger
Rebuild the engine, put in high compression pistons, leave the turbos and heat exchangers out. Drive without hot V turbos for reliability
What about that FB RX-7? Swap the BMW engine into it?
How are the v12 of this gen 7 series?
00:35 "for the love of God, don't do it". On your knees no less. Must be serious. Let's go buy one, just so we can see…..
It even comes with a tow loop already installed.
This V8 was so bad, BMW had them fail in the warranty period a lot and lost money on them. And they were quick to act. The revised N63 is basically a completely different engine. Not really, but so much was just redisigned from scratch to do the same Because these… Were so bad.
The only real solution for one of these is to put the facelift engine into it. Otherwise they are complete money pits and time consumers.
this car doesnt have only 120k miles, more like 200k
stay away from high strung BMWs, just a rule of life.
From the title I was assuming it was about the N20.
any engine without a dipstick IS an ABOMINATION and an accident waiting to happen….BMW's are payback for WW2….LOL
