Audi S3 Water Pump & Thermostat Replacement DIY (2015-2021 Audi 8V A3, S3, TT, TTS)

Audi S3 Water Pump & Thermostat Replacement DIY (2015-2021 Audi 8V A3, S3, TT, TTS)

►On the Audi 8V A3, S3, and TT, it’s as if Audi engineered the water pump and thermostat to fail. The thermostat housing is made of plastic, and the water pump is made of aluminum. Over time, the plastic of the thermostat will either crack or leak from the gasket between the two pieces. If left long enough, this causes significant cooling leaks and can cause permanent damage to your engine.

Since the water pump and thermostat on the 8V Audi A3, S3, and TT are electronically monitored, when you do spring a leak, you will get a check engine light and fault code for “Coolant Insufficient Flow.” If you do see this, you need to immediately address this problem as you have the potential to overheat your engine.

Follow along as Aaron Davis, FCP Euro’s Audi Catalog Manager, demonstrates how to replace the water pump and thermostat on this 8V S3.

paski502 possner says:

Emielrwb says:

Before mounting the new pump you've stickt the connection pipe skew into the oil-cooler with lots of vaseline I assume? (saw you applied the new connection pipe to the waterpump first, but that's very tough mounting)

MotorHead Tech says:

I don't understand. I've been changing water pumps for the longest time and nothing compared to this 18 hour long headache. Installation was perfect, them next day P00B7 is static when ignition is on, code states coolant pump has low performance & thats when I hopped on the internet trying to see what happened. Because so far, i really don't want to believe that I have a factory defective pump

Judah S says:

How is it possible to field check the position sensor?

NoName says:

What do shops charge to do this?

Sky says:

Excellent video. so how long of a job is this? What does Audi time it out for in labor cost? When using the coolant fill tool does the system need bleeding or just start it up and check level once hot?

Bird-Dog81 says:

Take it the golf gti is the same process?

Twizy TT says:

Great video, thank you. Audi have just informed me my TTS thermostat is showing signs of a leak.

Ahjinae says:

So on average, what would be the cost of getting a thermostat housing replaced?

deegleedee says:

6:25 careful don't hurt yourself!

Chris In Maine says:

Thank you soo much! Great video! I saved myself about $900 using your video!

John Doe says:

Amazing video. Expertise in the repair & video editing are on full display. Curious what shop labor rate is for the removal & reinstall.

Michello Coffie says:

23:25 they skip the vid that part is also important because if there is air in the system the thermostat will not open

Alin I. says:

Hello, I like your videos, are very clear. If I need to replace the oil cooler I think I need to do the same steps no?
I need to remove the water pump,so evrything what you showed in the video because i saw the oil cooler is in the back of water pump…
but I m not sure if need to take out the alternator.Thank you!!!.

Hartzland says:

After watching this there's no way I'm attempting to do mine, I will just pay the poor guy that has to do it.

Stephan Contreras says:

After watching this video I’m thinking about trying to replace the water pump myself, I had the thermostat replaced but didn’t think of replacing the water pump while I was at it which caused overheating issues shortly after replacing. I’ve never done work that requires to remove many components but it doesn’t seem awfully hard. Any recommendations?

Gerald G says:

Thanks to this amazing video with detailed steps and camera shots, I was able to perform this job on my A3…saved me BIG $$$$. I tried to buy the part from you guys, but you and most others were out of stock. Thanks!

S C says:

I assume no coding is needed after?

Asap Rulers says:

This looks like the worst job ever. Would hate to be an Audi tech

Gerald G says:

This is by far the best, most detailed video I've found for doing this job…can't thank you enough for the level of EXPLANATIONS and CAMERA ANGLES. That's what's usually missing from most DIY videos. Thanks!!

Mickey Rat says:

VAG engineers definitely dropped the ball with this design. Pretty unacceptable that you have to remove so many component to get to a pump that is so prone to failure.

David says:

Class action lawsuit has me wondering if I should get this done preventatively

Quitplaying says:

Hi, Replacing the water pump but do you know the part number for the last coolant y union that you took out? Mine has a crack by the middle and is leaking coolant there.

Trace says:

Hey can having a bad water pump cause and EPC light to come on? Noticed I had a bad water pump, I would just top it off daily for about a week then the EPC light came on and car won’t move when trying to accelerate. Just rpm’s goes up.
