What is most likely happening is that there is a solenoid in the shifter that releases the gear selector when you press the brake pedal, it sounds like this has failed or the system is not working correctly. Scroll down in the description for this video and you will see a link for other reasons for P1706. It’s called an Inter-Lock System.

Would this fix my 04 acura tl, bc its stuck on park, and all my lights work fine even the brake lights

BundysGarage says:

Kathy, yes there can be codes for the transmission even though the check engine light is not on. If you can have the car scanned and see if there are any codes in there.

Kathy Lagor says:

BundysGarage, thanks for the reply. My car doesn’t have the check engine light on, so will there be any codes stored? thanks for your help.

tyrathis2 says:

I’ve got a problem where my manual 1996 Honda Accord will not start, but when kickstarted, drives fine. When you hold the clutch and turn the key, all interior lights go off but no starter motor. All fuses have been checked, battery connection has been checked. My next thought took me to a video of the neutral-safetey switch. Should I be inspecting this part?

israel chapa says:

how much does it cost?

Mark Wells says:

You will only find this type neutral safety switch, as he says also known as the range switch, to let the ECU-EMC know it is safe to start the engine as mthe transmission is in park or neutral, thus neutral safety switch.

BundysGarage says:

Kathy, the transmission range switch tells the computer what range the transmission is in as well as acting as a neutral safety switch, meaning, the car will only start in park. The problem you describe sounds like it is electrical. Have you had the vehicle checked for and trouble codes? If not, get the car scanned and see what codes are stored. It sounds like a bad transmission solenoid. Have is checked out cause the longer you drive it like that the more damage it can be causing to your car.

Kathy Lagor says:

Can you tell me what the part your installing is for? I have a problem with my 03 Honda Accord V6 transmission. When I start driving, it will try to shift from 1st to 2nd, then stick in that gear. I have to slow down for it to click into the next gear, or sometimes it won’t click at all. I have to pull over and stop. That seems to help. I have to do that all day on some days. After that It may not do this again for a week. Is this a mechanical problem or electrical. thanks for the help!

BundysGarage says:

@Brian, the OEM Honda Part number is as follows: 28900-P7X-013 SENSOR, POSITION, you can always cross reference this numbers at Napa Online, Auto Zone and O’Reilly’s websites.

Brian Savage says:

Do you know the part number for 01 Accord V6 coupe? Much appreciated.

BundysGarage says:

@fcbjavi5, I’m not sure on a 1997 Honda Prelude.

fcbjavi5 says:

Is it the same process for a 97 prelude ??

98bluestreak says:

The range switch is not located on the transmission on the 97-99 V6 CL. It is in the gear-shift assembly. I am on my 3rd transmission now (first two used, both slipped 1st-2nd, now have a reman) and on all 3 I pull this code. The car will downshift to 1st hard and early, but it is fine any other time. Since this is a reman and should be well put together, I’m more concerned about this code and it may be the reason for my problem. Any advice?

BundysGarage says:

Yes the transmission range switch / neutral safety switch can also be found on the 1998. The 98 has a 4cyl engine so I’m not sure on the exact location. But yes there is a switch on the vehicle.

Aaron Rivera says:

is that switch can also be found in odessy 98??

BundysGarage says:

Yes that might be one of the symptoms.

Lee jr says:

would that cause your car to act like its in neutral when you put it in any gear

BundysGarage says:

No it sounds more like the system that stops your from changing gears unless your foot is on the brake pedal. Its called the reverse lock system. Scroll down in the description of my video and you will see a link for Another Reason for P1705 or P1706. I hope this helps you out, if it does not, send me an email at bundysgarage@gmail.com.

Hello. You made this look so easy so i would like to try it myself. but first i want to make sure that I’m going to be buying the right part….I have a 1999 Honda Accord lx and just recently every time i push in the brake to shift from Park, it will not shift. It’s like it gets stuck, and then gotta wait a couple of minutes before I’m finally able to shift from Park. Is it the neutral safety switch that’s causing this??

BundysGarage says:

@TheMidSystem, glad I could help you out and that’s great you and your son spent some time working together. My dad taught me about 60% of everything I know today when it comes to repairing cars, trucks, gas, diesel, 2 stroke, boats, chainsaws, motorcycles, etc, etc, etc……

TheMidSystem says:

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for such an awesome video! Good presentation and explanation – much better than going to a shop and gives a chance for my son and I to work together 🙂

BundysGarage says:

Henry, yes it should be located in the same place for a 99 Honda Odyssey.

Henry T says:

will this switch be located in the same place on a 99 Honda Odyssey V6? I have the map from the dealer of the pc location but I cannot find. However, I did find it on the driver front wheels as shown in your video. Will that be it?

Thanks!

HT

06 Honda Accord coupe 2.4. It recently turned off while i was driving it. Got it towed to my parking lot and i was able to get it to turn on again. Problem is that the car wont shift from Park. I’ve been able to get my way around it by taking off the little plastic cover right next to the shifter and honding it down the button to switch over to Drive or Reverse. How can I fix this? What went wrong? I dont want to drive it to the dealer if this is something i can fix. Would appreciate a response.

BundysGarage says:

@speakurz, it sounds like a bad transmission solenoid.

BundysGarage says:

It is on the passengers side of the engine, remove the pass side tire and the splash guard and the switch should be right there.

lizard72a says:

I have a 2001 honda civic lx 4 door, but I am not sure where this part is located. Would you happen to know?

speakurz says:

No everything is fine with the car. The only problem is if I switch to semi auto it stays in automatic. The flashing light starts as soon as I put it in d5 but stops once I put it in reverse or park. Transmission SEEMS fine.

BundysGarage says:

Please give me more specifics on your problem. Is it shifting into 5th? Does it buck or surge when going from park to drive or back again? Does the flashing D5 light go off after you shut off the car for at least a minute and then fire the car back up and the D5 light stops flashing? If you let me know I think I can help you pin point the problem.

speakurz says:

I got a code p1709 on my acura cl 2003. It says it the trans gear selection switch circuit comprehensive. I have no idea what that means. But since then my car won’t go into tiptronic. But it drives fine on d5 also my d5 light flashes. Any idea on how to fix that?

BundysGarage says:

@CL2001CHO, I would try replacing it first. It’s cheaper than taking it to a dealership and paying them $120 to hook a computer up to your vehicle

CL2001CHO says:

Hi John,
Thank you for the great video.
I got a different code: P0705 ACURA – Short In Transmission Range Switch Circuit.
The ’02 CLS runs fine most of the time, once in a while there are jerky shifting from 1st to 2nd.
Would replace the Transmission range switch fix the problem.

Thanks

BundysGarage says:

@Leftbehind126, it’s my pleasure, I’m glad it helped you out and that it saved you some money as well.

Leftbehind126 says:

Thank you so much! This was soooo helpful!!!!!!

Cortez Harris says:

Great Video thanks.

BundysGarage says:

@Gusoutgoing, I believe it is on the passengers side of the vehicle located on the transmission. I will try to post a picture.

Gusoutgoing says:

hi, I got a 2005 Honda civic Lx sedan automatic 4door 1.7 , can you advise me where is the neutral safety switch is located? Thank you

Ahmed Elbannan says:

Thank you Bundy’s garage

Has1b says:

I got the code for transmission range switch gear sensor and a check engine light. I didn’t fix it because everything ran fine and this happened one and a half months ago.
Now the drive “D” has started blinking. I don’t know what for, could it be for the same sensor?
I want to replace but I’m poor and not mechanically inclined. The car runs normal though, is it something that can be ignored?

I have an Acura RSX base, 2003.

BundysGarage says:

Julie, no problem, I’m glad I could help you out. Please spread the word about my channel, thanks.

Julie Cherubini says:

Thank you Bundy’s garage. This video is hands down one of the best Youtube videos on automotive repair that I have seen. You are a life saver. Thank you!!
