I’m Wayne The Boat Guy – a few years ago I bought my first boat and started boating. I knew practically nothing about boats or boating before jumping into it with both feet. My channel is dedicated to all the boating and kayak related things I am learning about and doing because I want to share what I have had to struggle to figure out on my own with anyone who might be trying to learn or in the same BOAT as me!

Thank you for posting this video. I am having an issue on a new-to-me 20+ year old boat with the Volvo Penta 5.7 where the engine does not appear to be sucking in any seawater which leads to it getting hot quickly. If I have it attached to the dock water hose it works fine and the water circulates and the engine cools down. The impeller housing looks exactly like yours and comes apart the same way as I was able to remove it today. The impeller looked to be in ok shape but I ordered a replacement one anyway because I do not know how old it is. It looked to me like the inlet should be at the top and the bottom hose goes up to the thermostat housing but I am sure it was installed the opposite way when I removed the hoses. I tried it both ways and neither caused any water to circulate as I could tell because I disconnected the top of the hose by the thermostat. I ran the dock water backwards through the inlet hose and I could feel it coming out the inlet holes in the drive unit so I don't think it is clogged or blocked. Is there something in the drive unit that forces the water through the system or is it just sucked in from this pump/impeller? Is the inlet side the top? Thank you for any advice.

Wayne, Thanks for the nice detailed instructions on changing your impeller. I am glad everything went smoothly after you got the right parts. I am a big fan of using antisieze on the bolts when you re install them. It makes the process of removing them much safer/easier for the next time. I think it is also worthwhile trying to research the torque numbers for the bolts. They should be out there somewhere on the net. I-boats forum has some numbers for Volvo impeller housings at 29 ft/lbs. The electronic torque wrenches for these small jobs are a good way to go.

Have you had to buy a bunch of new tools to work on your boats, or is it mostly just the standard stuff the average person would have lying around the garage?
