Volvo 850 Restoration – ABS Repair Attempt And Final MOT Prep – Day 38

There are a few final issues which we want to repair on our Volvo 850 before applying for the technical examination (MOT). One of the major ones is the faulty Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) which we tried to fix by addressing three common issues. These are a broken fuse, deteriorated wiring harness on the cables going to the ABS pump (which might cause a short) and possible faulty solder joints on the ABS module itself.

– Project’s Background Story –
On February 21 ’09 our dad bought this ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate. The Volvo has a big emotional value for us and seeing the car sitting still for so many years and watching nature taking over broke our hearts. After nine years, and sitting outside for 7 of those 9 years, we finally got our hands on the 850 and brought it back to its home where we will restore it to its former glory. Once we finish the restoration, we intend to make a road trip and keep in the family for many more years to come.

PlimP nemalp says:

the ABS control module overheat(power cables) and you have soldering problems cause the rotor of the pump stucks, open the motor and check the brushes , check the motor before the installation , also check the fuse (30A) and you are in the game ;), I have to extra working modules(2 mistakes) for cars with tracs.

Volvo Bjorn says:

Het lijkt erop dat die draden goed warm zijn geweest, wellicht toch de pomp gewoon die teveel stroom verbruikt dan normaal wat dus wijst op een defecte pomp 😉

Newton says:

have a look at wheels side abs sensors and rings.

Jankes says:

I Think when those pump motor had those Old cables without the isolation the could touch toghther and break the pump from inside cause of + and – touch together

Sebastian Schwarz says:

Nice attempt to fix the ABS. I love the non-airbag dash pad. I would love to get one shipped to the US if you ever find another.

Yeeess! My fav sunday thing to do! the flying working dutchies on the favourite Volvo! good works guys! 🙂 oddly enough I also just did the ABS Module thing but still havon the codes 😀 as of corrosion the problem might also be the ABS rings on the wheels or the sensors being lifted slightly up and the sensors are not in the correct distance to the rings anoymore. (if that makes sense). Groetjes uit Duitsland! 😉
