This video will show you the quick and easy method of replacing the alternator on a Volvo 850 and S/V70. Should work for all model years from 1993 – 1998. Took me about 2 hours. Please post the mileage on your car of your alternator failure.

When you put in the lower hidden alternator bolt, prior to putting the power steering pump assembly in, don’t push the bolt all the way in, the threads will be in the way of the bracket. Just push it through till the tip is level with the front of the motor.

Dang I think I should pull alternators at the junkyard just to get practice. Holy crap. Volvo 164 alternator replacement …. Get tunes going…. Grab tastey beverage…. Admire car… Think about actually rebuilding from scratch for fun… Order part… Lol. Order only Volvo parts for this and replace serpentine belt and upper hose and flush system. I'll be unfortunately using this video eventually. Thanks El Robert!

Very interesting! – The alternators on my '99 V70 and S70, mount differently to this.

I had two alternator failures in two weeks (one on each car) just before Christmas. The first one (Oliver) just upped and quit on a trip to town – working when I parked, and wasn't working when I came back to the car an hour later. The other one (Sylvia) 'fried n' died' en-route to hospital one morning. It did strange things to the warning lights (ABS and SRS) and was overcharging just after it failed, and burned out my headlight bulbs! Shortly after that, the alternator stopped outputting completely – well weird.

I ended up taking them both to the local garage (I bought my own replacements) and they did the job while I waited. The first one took just an hour to swap, and the second one took forty minutes (the guy reckoned it was because having done one already, it was easier next time round!). But looking at them, and the one in this video, there's quite a difference in the mountings. . . Good job I bought the right ones!

I have a steering rack to replace on Sylvia, and I reckon it'll be another garage job. I have the new rack, but don't fancy grovelling about in the dirt – and it looks like an awkward and fiddly job?

Michael Sackstein says:

Well that job certainly looks more complicated than I would’ve thought.
