I propably leave it alone because I don’t plan to sell my Volvo. I use digital gauge from on board computer to see when it’s time to change oil and filter. I have program in my laptop and USB – OBDII cable to see error codes in ECU. It’s only able to reset if there is something. It was handy when my ABS sensor was bad.

Robert DIY says:

There is a complicated system that is discussed on Matthews Volvo Site. I really do not understand it. I have also read of people having it done at the dealer but most dealers do not know how to do it either.

MsMikko81 says:

I have a 1996 and OBDII. How do I get the actual number of miles?

Robert DIY says:

Thanks for watching.

Hunter Wright says:

Robert your videos are awesome! Three times now you have helped me! I owe ya one man. From one Volvo owner to another, thank you!

Robert DIY says:

LOL, get rid of the parked vehicle. Old vehicles rot when not driven ever few days.

invisibletouch96 says:

I’m not used to a luxury car, heated seats, sunroof, leather,Bose stereo, lol it’s somethin new and I definitely like it,now my 1988 Dodge Dakota just sits

Robert DIY says:

Sweet! Hope you get another 143,000 more.

invisibletouch96 says:

143,000 original

Robert DIY says:

Cool. Let us know the actual mileage on the cluster.

invisibletouch96 says:

You are a god damn genius.thank you so much go your help,I really appreciate it, I just bought a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT yesterday for $200,odometer broke with 143,000 so I will post the actual mileage after I try this

invisibletouch96 says:

What if the odometer on my 93 850 glt? How can I find out the actual mileage

Robert DIY says:

Maybe turn the car off then on again. Do you have the key to run?

kraftyw1999 says:

My car flashes twice when I do the initial “Push 5 times.” It won’t go past that. Any ideas?

Robert DIY says:

Not to my knowledge. I was thinking about dropping the cluster into a ’95 and reading the mileage then putting it back.

LJRossPhoto says:

I’ve got a 96 Volvo 850. There’s no OBD Control Box there. Is there any way of doing it in my car?

Robert DIY says:

Ouch! Don’t tell them how to read the mileage. LOL, Just kidding.

Killashard says:

You’ll catch up and pass me. I’m trading it in for a new car. The Volvo is on its last legs. I’m sad to see it go.

Robert DIY says:

Cool, you have just a little more miles than me. I’ll catch you by the end of September.

Killashard says:

Thanks a lot! The odometer in my 1995 Volvo 850 broke in 2006. The shop wanted $119 to check the mileage! I was able to do it myself and it is 238,119. Thanks again!

Robert DIY says:

Volvo uses the worse plastic in these cars. I have seen some break at 75,000 miles and some go for 380,000 miles. Some of the guys say they usually break the gear teeth when they are reset while the car is moving. I almost never reset mine because I have a trip computer in my car.

You can also use the SERVICE REMINDER to track time/miles between oil changes.

The dealer may know a way. Other than that you’d have to install the cluster in a ’95 to retrieve the mileage.

Kimberly Powell says:

So on a 1996 850, there is no way to tell actual mileage?? Why are the odometers so prone breaking??

PO2Harris says:

Its a 96, now I understand. Thanks for the video anyways

Robert DIY says:

What year is your car?

PO2Harris says:

The computer is not there in my car

Robert DIY says:

We do the mileage on the 850’s because most of them have broken gears in the ODO leaving the true mileage in question.

Robert DIY says:

Car will have no idea that the motor was replaced. The odo mileage is likely what the frame has. To check the health of the motor do a compression test.

getdrunk19902 says:

Do S70s have that under the hood to? And the person I bought the car from said the engine was replaced and had 118,000 on it. The dash says over 200,000. Because the engine was replaced will it flash saying 118,000 or does the car not know the engine was replaced?

Robert DIY says:

Ten blinks equals “0”, so the car has 140,*** miles.

diggingisrael says:

Thanks for your tutorials! I followed your instruction for reading the first three numbers and the light sequence goes 1 then 4 then 10. the last blinking sequence of 10 is what confuses me. ???

Robert DIY says:

No, you can purchase the replacement gear on eBay, iPd, or FCPEuro. There are several places to get the gear to fix it and several printed instructions on repairing it. I’ll do a video next time I tear into one.

Donovan Williams says:

my volvo 850 odometer has stopped working, do I have to buy a new cluster

Robert DIY says:

Yikes!!! That’s ok, if you can take care of it, it’ll go 500,000. Do the timing belt, PCV system and keep the oil changed and you’ll be alright.

owen75 says:

the car was sold to me saying it had 141,XXX miles but in reality it had 250,XXX -__- oh well.

somaohio says:

Great help. Thanks.

Robert DIY says:

I’ll try that again. The last time I tried, YouTube rejected my attempt.
