Hi Erik GREAT video for service position which had me a bit mystified
before. Problem I am having is that my alternator is wedged so tight I
cannot remove it. Bolts are out, I have muscled and used leverage only to
leave me with an alternator that is now pressed down as far as it can go –
hitting some metal below , maybe the block and is now just stuck. Cannot go
down any more, will not move sideways, and stii about 50% attached to top
dog-ears.

Didier Florez says:

Very helpful, thank you. 2004 Passat: needed to remove all 8 bumper shock
bolts in order to slide the front end forward. Some other minor differences
as well. However, would not have finished this nearly as quickly without
this DIY.

Jason Watson says:

More like 3 hours… ’99 Passat. A few differences but all in all, very
helpful. Thanks for posting this.

Zechariah Trujillo says:

Can you get to the starter this way?

Erik Wilson says:

it’s so easy….turn this bolt, turn that bolt. Mechanic work is all
sweat…no brains. (Usually)

Erik Wilson says:

Mine were too…I missed recording that part, but you can see that mine are
out as well.

Kayroseky says:

my audi looks like your VW i will try, THX 😀

jeremy24q says:

Hahaha are you kidding me VW?! Skip to minute 7:30 and then go call your
mechanic people!

Stanley Stevens says:

No it does not !

Erik Wilson says:

I know…it looks like a lot.

Odd-Arne Eriksen says:

The fan (aluminium bracket) blocks the lower bolt on the alternator on VW
Passat 2002..

Erik Wilson says:

…it’s ridiculous that they don’t give a bit more slack on those wires. I
think it took me 10 minutes just to disconnect the wires in the back…

Erik Wilson says:

Glad to Help…Although it Looks Intimidating, it’s Really Quite Easy.

ScottsdaleTwo says:

Erik. And all. Thanks for the video mostly but the comments too. I have my
Passat in service position. I took out the two bolts from the front. It
will not budge. Is there a third bolt holding this alternator in place from
the rear? I just cannot imagine it being this tight to move without another
bolt. I got the car tore apart I. A friend’s garage and need to figure this
out ASAP. Thanks so much in advance for your responses.

Scott Goodwin says:

OK good video on service position, but how about finishing the video and
showing the actual alternator removal and install??? Also, I keep hearing
that if you disconnect power from the battery your “throttle body
adaptation” will be lost and unless you take it to the dealer to do a
vag-com setup… Any truth to that?

LitoR says:

Just about an hour that’s all…..get the fuck outta here…..Fuck VW can’t
get the most obvious shit right…..smh

Piotr Niewinski says:

I will perform this repair today, just checking if any shortcuts available

jcastill0 says:

Thank you!!! This looks completely doable on my own now.

mralmanac says:

Thanks Erik!! I have been dreading this service position for quite some
time. 02 Passat GLX. The only thing I found different on my 02 compared to
your 05 was the front bumper shocks were bolted to the sub frame horns and
needed to be removed, 3 torx on each. We were done changing the alternator
and reassembled complete in about 3 hours. I did this once before without
using this procedure and it took about 3 days!! and MANY swear words.
Thanks again for the video. s.

you sir, you are the passat messiah

lennonpolo says:

I think I saw a towel holder @8:06.

Scott Goodwin says:

Finally got it… Thanks!

Scott Goodwin says:

We are still in the middle of it all… WIth the carrier out of the way
there is just BARELY barely barely enough room… the stupid power cable
going to the back of the alternator only has about 1 inch of slack in it so
even when you get the alternator disengaged from the mounting ears it is
almost impossible to turn it around to get the flippin wire off… We are
in the middle of installing the new one now… Last VW I ever buy

Erik Wilson says:

It is very tight to move….you need to give it a light slam with a hammer,
or a long pry bar. Careful…the wires that connect to the back of it are
VERY short…you might have an inch of slack at most…

Erik Wilson says:

Alternator is so easy once the carrier is out of your way…No instructions
needed. Really I just wanted to show the service position, there were no
videos of it on youtube. And about the “throttle body adaptation”, I’ve
never heard of such a thing.

Tarzisme says:

Awesome vid bull shit job though I work in a shop and we have no info for
these

jeteye97 says:

Great job! This should help a lot of people!

Madison Shoppa says:

Thanks for the video! We just had our car appraised for this
repair/replacement – mechanic wants 600$! Think we will figure it out
ourselves. Dad lives a day away – too far to help.

Kpremote says:

Follow up to previous post – any idea how to free the beasty alternator? I
imagine many following your excellent video either are, or will be, in a
similar situation. Your recommendations are greatly appreciated.
