How to Rebuild VW & Audi’s Most Popular Engine | EA888

This is a complete, step-by-step VW and Audi EA888 engine rebuild, covering both the 1.8T and 2.0T versions of one of the most widely used modern Volkswagen Group engines. We take the EA888 from a bare engine block to a fully assembled engine, explaining the entire rebuild process, critical measurements, assembly procedures, common mistakes, and the details that determine whether a rebuilt engine lives or fails.

The rebuild covers the EA888 cylinder block, crankshaft, main and rod bearings, pistons, piston rings, connecting rods, cylinder head, camshafts, valvetrain, timing system, oiling system, gaskets, seals, and final engine assembly. Whether you are rebuilding an engine from a VW GTI, Golf R, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, Audi A3, A4, Q3, Q5, or another 1.8T or 2.0T EA888-powered vehicle, this video will help you understand what is involved before starting the job. Exact components and procedures can vary by EA888 generation and engine code, so always verify the correct specifications for your engine.

Special thanks to @elringdasoriginal for partnering with me on this complete EA888 rebuild and providing expert insight into the gaskets, seals, fasteners, and critical sealing details used throughout the engine.

I have seen audi b9 a4 b cycle ea888 with RTV circa 2022, but my then 2018 b9 a5 full fat ea888 uses anaerobic sealant on the cam over. It was leaking when its 4 years old, resealed under warranty with green anaerobic sealant, and it leaked again 2 years later

@Rabbydabbydoo says:

Forgot to mention that the forged rods can’t have the caps mixed up as they’re one piece originally and the castings cannot be interchanged with each other although, yours did not look like that for some reason.
Mine are on a 2018 golf R.

My take away?
Professional level procedures for any engine.

Just a helpful bit of knowledge. Many are aware of round pipe cleaners. Generally a twisted metal wire brush with steel,brass or nylon brushes.
In the marketplace are available plastic/nylon handles with nylon brushes. In almost any length and diameter.
Every oil and water passage should have a brush put through it. The nylon handles will make the tight turns the metal handles won't.

My stock 2015 GTI has 213k miles and only consumes about 1/2-2/3 quart of oil every 5k miles

Who tf buys auto parts off amazon? They're even worse at giving you the wrong part than autozone.

1:56 the recalls for auto components that are destroying themselves from machining chips and grit that is being left in parts. Great point on cleaning up after your machine shop!

Charles I don't know if you read my mind…saw my instagram message…lol i dont know. i was literally debating on tearing down my motor or at least enough to get to replacing the valves/seals. THANK YOU. Also is there anyway to truly diag failing stem seals without visually inspecting? borescope/leakdown…anything?

@OGs-o-n says:

Just got a 3500 dollar bill from Audi, damned plastic sumps and playdough driveshafts HAHA…

@DucMike1 says:

Definitely lol regarding the color options us peons here are offered. Fun fact though: definitely entertaining watching along and recalling every single part number involved in the cam bridge job. fml… And the number of those rear main seals I had to field calls on, back in the dark days. “No sir, that seal was not a bad part. Yes sir; they are difficult to install properly. No sir; we will not replace it for free.”

@Burnt223 says:

Hey very interesting would this be considered as ea888 3b since the intake valve avs or normal ea888? Also curious what are main differences between gen 3 vs gen 4 gen 3b engines. I’m curious because I have a 40tsfi 2023 a4.

Thank you
