Problem: clogged pcv/oil separator Result: oil fumes and crank case pressures get too high and blow a hole through the pcv diaphragm and/or rear main seal. Repair: replace one or both as needed. Knowledge: had to do many of these while I worked at vw, it was a common problem on the 2.0T on the GTI/GLI, Tiguan, Passat etc. Generally the pcv was the only thing needed to be repaired, about every 2 of 3 only needed a pcv valve, that other 3rd car always needed the rear main as well. Sometimes you can hear the diaphragm whistle faintly as it blew the fumes out, the rear main one was harder to detect, almost always needing a smoke machine. I would get the car in the shop, smoke it and if I didn’t CLEARLY see the smoke from the rear main seal, I would make sure to suggest it anyway because it’s a problem(specially with high mileage vehicles if not in the visible history), but always replaced pcv and retested with smoke machine after to verify the rear main wasn’t leaking very little(pretty common, about 1 of every 5 or 6 had to replace the rear main after the pcv anyway).
You got a bad pcv. You gotta to all and the pcv Im sure the codes appear a while back… But the light was ignored even the real check engine light the epc light…
That’s some expensive smoke! And I thought my dealer was bad.

Make sure to replace PCV along with new rear main
Finding a leak with a smoke machine is something I've never even considered, but I will be doing it from here on out. Thank you
Im done worh gas cars. Only electric moving forward

There is a tsb pertaining to this! It is caused by a failed pcv/crankcase vent valve on top of cam tower….happens every time people don't fix it…
Would also replace the pcv valve with the rear main
Is it safe to say that if smoke comes out that easy that it's a really bad seal?
You don’t need a smoke machine to find that leak. There is is a trail
Did you have to drain the oil first?
