I engineered an aluminum tiny tube (i had it in my garage that I bought from HomeDepot awhile ago); so the tiny vacuum line goes perfectly inside this aluminum tube and the tube goes nicely in the thicker rubber tube (other side). Vacuum tube is plastic (easily breaks, so I used my drill with a small bid to get a broken pieces from where it used to be / other thicker end hole). then I used my wife’s lashes glue (haha best superglue int he world!) and it worked like a champ!

Thank you friend. got the serpentine tensioner, replaced and the engine purrs like a kitten.

Saturday, my mechanic is going to chase down the leak, coming from the front of the car. I had the moon seal. cam chain tensioner gasket seal replaced, along with the valve cover gasket and both front camshaft seals.

2001 Audi A4 1.8T AWM I think i need to look lower as there is smoke coming from the front, so oil is getting on the hot exhaust. maybe turbo oil seal? The A4 B5 v6 engines have caps

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

Your leak could be the cam seal or cap or crank seal. Also make sure you drive the car for a little while so all the old gunk gets burned up, sometimes it takes a while. Also if the noise up front is coming from the tensioner that you can visually see its the serpentine belt tensioner but if its coming from behind that where the timing belt and components are it could be the timing belt tensioner and needs to be taken care off asap. Ofcourse these are all guesses without seeing the car. GL

morpheousx says:

Do you know if this tensioner is for the timing belt, serpentine belt or camshaft chain tensioner? Which?

morpheousx says:

Hello friend, I have a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T B5 it’s leaking even after I just had the valve cover gasket done, the old is still coming from the front of the car, could it be that I also have a leaking camshaft seal? I also have a leak coming from under the engine near the rear. I believe it’s the rear main seal. Also near the front of the car, there is a tensioner/ damper that is making a loud noise, whenever I put the car is drive, that needs to be replaced.

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

I will be doing a half moon seal video sometime soon so stay tuned, the connector is part of the pcv tubing. I dont remember exactly but that one might go into/under neath the intake manifold and somewhat difficult to replace, plus you have to go to the dealer for it. I just used zip ties to keep it in place. gl

Andrei Cojocaru says:

Great video brother! Also, was wondering if you did do the half moon seal yet?:) just like the other guy, but hey, i also broke that little plastic connector of that vacuum line you broke, where did you buy that from or how is it called? How did you fix it?

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

Sounds like you have leaking spark plug tube seals, if you remove the valve cover you will see it. Most valve cover gaskets come with it. If you havent done this before I recommend getting someone else to first verify this than do the repair. If you dont replace the valve cover gasket right you will get a leak elsewhere. GL

hi i vw passat v6 2.8 i have a 2,3,5 cylinder misfire i toked to mechanic they said i had problem vs coil pack and plugs paid aroud 500 to change them after changing it was good after 2 days the same problem came back i checked by my self spark plug tubes has a oil on it i cleaned but somehow its keep coming back when i clean it it runs good any sugestion ? plz help if u know something

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

Alot of time people replace those while in there. I didnt do it on this car though. and dont apply sealant/RTV silicone to the entire gasket just the areas mentioned in the video. I might do a video on the half moon seal and chain tensioner gasket later if I get another 2.8L VW in my sight. GL

Bert T. says:

Did you replace the half moon seal and the cam tensioner gasket? Isn’t it also necessary? Do you apply sealant on the entire gasket or just on the top side of the curved parts of the gasket? Thanks.

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

You should do the gasket and the camshaft cap on the passenger side, you’ll need to remove the air filter housing and remove the bolt for the oil dipstick. You’ll either need to buy a very short torx bit to remove the camshaft bearing holding in the camshaft cap at the back of the engine or cut a torx bit to make it shorter(what I did). There is no room to fit a regular size bit with a ratchet over the bolt and if you try doing it at an angle you risk stripping out the inside of the bolt. GL

Good video. I have a 99 VW Passat and I see light smoke coming from the passenger side of the engine.I think it may be the Valve cover gasket.By the looks of it it may not be that difficult to do myself. About how long do you think it would take and other than the gasket what tools would i need?

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

if its just the items in the video it should be about 1-2hrs labor for both sides. labor/hr rates vary from shop to shop so shop around. parts should run you about $70-$80 for both sides. gl

Sunny suleman says:

I have 2002 passat same oil leak problem.. how much will it cost to get it fixed?

kofi poku says:

Great simple video!! Thx 🙂

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

I am pretty sure it is. But not a 100%, look up engine compatibility for your car to find out. GL

montez1031 says:

Hey man, I have an 99 Audi A6 Quattro Avant 2.8L. Would it be the same for it as well?

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

ty for your comment and for the sub. cheers!

bnguy619 says:

Love your video..I need to do this to mine too. Thanks for this and thumbs to you and your video!! Subscribed as well :).

Kayroseky says:

No, thank you for uploading this great video! :D!

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

Good info, ty.

Kayroseky says:

According a manual a found online the valve cover gasket should be torque at 7ft lb, the same for the little thingy

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

you wont need the special tool for the valve cover gasket and camshaft cap, but for the cam chain tensioner gasket and half moon seal(blue seal) you will need a special tool to depress the cam chain tensioner.

Noob Mechanic says:

Hey so just to be clear. I am going to be replacing my audi a4 valve cover gaskets as well as half moon seal, cam chain tensioner gasket, and cam shaft seals. I won’t need the special tool since I won’t be needing to loosen the cam chain. Correct?

d3v3ouzm1ndz says:

can you show us how to do the half moon seals, and pretty please show the proper way to jack up a volkswagen passat b5.5 02-05 model… for instance is it ok to have the car sitting on the pinch welds on jack stands?? a vid response would be greatful

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

Oh and you’ll need a special tool to depress the chain tensioner so add that to the list as well. I would replace valve cover gasket and cap than see if I still have a leak and go from there.

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

You can change the camshaft seal, it wont require tearing the car apart but its a little difficult. If I remember correctly you will have to remove the intake camshaft with the camshaft tensioner itselt, there are obviously other steps you’ll need to take like marking the chain and setting TDC…etc I would invest in a good repair guide if you want to tackle that job. by valley plugs I assume you mean the spark plug hole seal and you’ll see/replace it when you remove the Valve Cover. GL

Nikost1987 says:

like unbolting the entire ftont end etc…etc..

Nikost1987 says:

hmm…thank you very much once again for all the information!!! i have also something else to ask…won’t i also have to change the cam chain tensioner seal and the valley plugs..? if yes/or no how i will know..? and how exactly can that be done..? if i don’t change the cam chain tensioner will the oil leaks stop..? i am asking because i watched a couple videos from blauparts. com and i’m trying to learn if i can avoid going through all the trouble their showing on their videos..like..

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

I take that back the process for the other side might be alittle harder since you will have to remove the air filter housing and the oil dipstick. Also make sure you get a small size torx bit to fit over the screws that hold the cam bearing in place other wise you might strip them. gl

RatchetsAnd Wrenches says:

No you dont have to touch the camshaft, just remove the bearing cap. The process for the other side is actually easier since you have more room. Torque for valve cover 9ft/lbs and the bearing cap 14ft/lbs. I am taking an educated guess here as I dont have the manual for this engine. GL

Nikost1987 says:

thank you very much for your video…very helpful…!!!
i have a couple questions though… do you follow exactly the same proccess for both sides of the engine…? do i have to remove-lift the camshafts from the engine..? and how much torque for bolts..? thanks again
