How to Install a VW 5 Cyl 2.5 Engine Crank Position Sensor (G28)

How to Install a VW 5 Cyl 2.5 Engine Crank Position Sensor (G28)

Do you have a sporadic no start condition on your VW with a 2.5 5 Cyl engine? This video will show you how to replace the crankshaft position sensor (G28), which is mostly commonly responsible for this symptom.

The crank position sensor’s job is to tell the the ECU in the car where the crankshaft is in it’s rotation. This is important because the vehicle needs this information for fuel injector and spark timing. Without this info the vehicle does not know what to do and this is why your vehicle may not start if you have a bad crank sensor.

My 2009 Rabbit has a big piece of plastic on the bottom which blocks a lot of the space there (it goes until most of the length of the crankshaft sensor cable). Do you have a guide on removing & re-installing that plastic cover?

Mason Perez says:

Can we do more for this car ?

Brandi Young says:

Can you tell me where the output shaft speed sensor is? Like send a picture or a quick five minute video

Michael Miller says:

Hey! I had mine replaced at 30K by the dealer under warrantee and now im at 76K with the same symptoms and codes. Going to swap it myself this time… Is there a torque spec for these bolts? And is there only one way it goes in or do i have to pay attention to how it comes out? Thanks! Your videos are amazing!

makfez moto mecanica says:

where is Engine Crank Position Sensor (G28) sitting on a golf 1.9 diesel 2008

Johno Vegas says:

Is it correct that you removed and installed the same sensor you removed? If this was a new DAP or similar OEM sensor, the installer would need to move over the split loom to the new sensor cable.

THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS WAS VERY HELPFUL!!!

Hey man, I do have a question I’m getting this error message Transmisión Sensor G182 I just wanna know if is the same issue or is complete different issue, btw I do have VW Jetta Mk5 automatic transmission 2.5L 5 cylinders thank you for the support mate.

Tro Rt says:

Thanks for video. Just got the P0322 yesterday at 110k miles. I guess it would’ve cost VW another $.000000001 per sensor to attach a little keeper washer to each bolt.

Vidal Br says:

thank's for the video, i fixed the problem EPC and warning motor in my car jetta 2005 2.5!

DFW rider says:

I just did that and it only got worse, possible my replacement sensor is faulty?

bigwetbutt says:

I have an 07 rabbit and the first symptom was a slightly/hardly noticeable longer crank to start. From there, there were a few rough shifts with higher idle at park, then the same day the stalling began (sometimes the epc light came on, sometimes not). Low speed stalling, everything dead, just the batter light lit up. After stalling, the car wouldn't start right away, 10-20 min of cooling, otherwise it would only crank. About 30 miles later, the thing would barely start at all and then the MIL/CEL finally came on with the EPC light. Codes p0321 and p0322 popped up; however, it took them a long time to finally show up, you may have gotten stranded before they would come….I'm lucky I didn't. Getting my sensor today, hope that's what it is, not some wiring issue.

I have a 2010 Jetta Sportswagen with roughly 65K miles. Bought it used about a year ago. Long story short it started out as this kind of violent little sputtering or bucking while driving…sometimes under heavy acceleration other times just under normal cruising speed. No lights would come on and it would be as if the motor would become unresponsive but all electrical would stay on then car would come back to life a few seconds later.

Then that started morphing into car just dying out while driving. Again no fault codes or warning lights coming on. I’d pull over stop and put car in park, restart car and it would start right back up.

Then that morphed into car now dying at idle, especially it seemed if you turned on the AC too. Then that morphed into car starting then immediately dying, start again…dies out again…then car doesn’t want to start at all for a while. Then you wait a while try again it starts.

Now I changed out the speed sensor already and the fuel pump and the car is still having the same issue. Should I change out the crankshaft and cam sensor next? Is the manifold dirty??? Is their some sort of other fuel, air or CPU issue??? Please help!!!!
