DIY – How To Fix a VW Engine/AC Fan

This is how I fixed my Volkswagen Jetta 2005.5 MK5 engine fans. The large fan was not working. The brushes inside the motor were stuck and needed cleaning. This video shows how to open the motor and fix the brushes that control the fan movement. It is easier than you think! you can do it!

Good luck! Like and SHARE this video if it helps you!!!

Andrew Seligman says:

My symptom was that when the driver-side (large) fan was running, all was well, but sometimes the large fan would stop for no apparent reason, and then the small fan would take off like a rocket. The dealer explained to me that when the large fan failed, its controller put the small (passenger-side) fan into overdrive to try and compensate. Quote: About $800 to replace both fans, as they were always sold as an "assembly".

I opened up the large fan following your procedure, and sure enough, one of the brushes was stuck, just like the one you show in the video. I've cleaned it up as you showed, and am waiting for the JB Weld to harden. I think that I'll do the small fan as well, since I have the assembly out, and after running in overdrive for a while it may have experienced extra wear.

Fingers crossed: If this works, and I do have a good feeling about it, You will have shown me how to save over $600!

One part that I found quite tricky: Replacing the lid. Those brushes did not want to stay back so that I could replace the lid. After all, the whole point was to get them to slide easily! I would up holding them back with thread, and once the lid was mostly in place, I pulled out the thread, releasing the brushes. I'm sure that there is some clever way that I did not know about, but the thread seemed to work.

I'm so glad I found this video, I'm gonna do this today. If I don't have a dremmel to open up the cover, what do you think would work well? Thanks again!

Hi Brandon. I have this happening now and was told by auto body it would cost over 800 to fix. and I don't have the money. They said they had to replace both fans. But I know one is working so was confused by that.   The engine light has been going off and on  the error says fan.  The light goes on if I use the air conditioner for a long period. Then you can hear it. If that makes sense. That sound that sometimes happens to cars when you turn it off after using the air conditioner.  I have a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5   Is it easy to fix?  Any help you could give me would be great. Thanks Dave

I believe my fan is doing the same thing. If I keep a constant speed without stopping the A/C cools, starts blowing cool air in about 10 minutes. I bought a new fan for 1/2 the cost of the local A/A, A/Z online from autohausaz. I am going to replace it and maybe repurpose the old fan for an air filter in m woodshop. I am sure it is a 12VDC fan motor, I will use a transformer/rectifier to convert the power from the wall AC outlet to VDC. Thanks for the Video.

I don't have a dremel to break the tack welds, any thoughts on another way to get it?

Ralph Young says:

After watching this video I decided to try the following. I opened the hood and gently tapped the fan with the flat side of a wrench. That was apparently enough force to unbid the brush because it started spinning. I was in and out in 60 seconds.

does the mk6 fan work the same way ? i mean if i open my mk6 golf fan will i find the mechanism inside ?

daniel alvarez says:

HI thanks for the vid. And did the fan failure caused the ac to take longer to blow cold air ? cuse im experiencing a problem with my ac, when i turn it on it takes almost 10 minutes to blow cold air and i have to run the car for ac to actually work, i read somewhere that this could be the reason. (sorry for my bad English)

Samantha Nockles says:

Thank you, used this video to fix my fan. Was pleased when I took the housing off and the problem was exactly what you said. And it only cost me $10!!

Hey just wanted to say a thank you for taking the time to post this clip. My Volkswagen Aux fan went out like yours and rather than spend the money I thought to open it up and take a look. Exactly the same thing. Took me about 2 hrs start to finish. Works like a champ now. Thanks again!
