I did give it a go but I think the thickness of the trimmer string is
critical. I went at it four times making sure my gap was tight as could be
yet sometimes it just refused to work. I can definitely see the merit in it
though. Unfortunately I had to go with 3/16″ nylon rope. That only took me
two tries and I got it.

Chris Vallone says:

Sure. I give no guarantees! =o)

heliarche says:

I’m going to use the string trimmer method myself. Mind if I post the
results here as a response?

Chris Vallone says:

We also do not know where you got your parts from, what you explain is
typical for cheap aftermarket seals and chrome. Did you silicone, did you
heat the seal a bit, maybe leave it out in the sun. There are many factors
involved.

kd5tmu says:

@brighteyefilms Yeah, sorry. I saw that after I posted this. Forgive me.

JdNtBrLrTi says:

I bought them from Cip1. The problem is solved, though. I paid a guy who
has a bug and an auto glass company to come out and fix me up. He saw it
rising in the opening just like I saw, so he brought out a big suction cup
and pulled the window down in the opening, then it went in nicely. The
windshield went in much nicer. Thanks, Chris for responding. You are a
gentleman and a scholar!

1uptospeed says:

thanks for the tip chris very helpful.

Hummingbirds2009 says:

Thanks for posting!!!!

MillsonTV says:

Hey im a 17 year old kid from texas and i bought my first bug a while back.
I really appreciate these videos. They are super informative and help a
lot. I just installed my rear window (couple of hours ago) and this video
helped a TON. Couldn’t of been made any better. Thanks.

Glowstick Sasquatch says:

Put in the rear window in my 63 Sedan today! Your knowledge is very much
appreciated Chris.I also put in the rear engine seal today. Thanks again
man..

Veronica Carrillo says:

great tips here! thanks

Adolfo Avendano says:

yo!, I never seen pop out windows Close up, But I just ordered some. Would
I put them the same way?? or do you have any tips >>? 1960 VW just in case.
Thanks, and DOPE VIDEOS

mechretired says:

Dont hit it, ever (2 tips, that is one.) on my 68 , no vinyl on the bottom.
rear. the top liner is very thick on mine (TMI HD grade ) i found putting
the top side in first was the only way, cross tie the string trimmer line.
at the top. then once the hard part (top edge) is done the bottom was so
easy. (in vinyl in the way) do not hit it, have the helper push in only on
the rubber just ahead of you. and pull the string way to center of with
window. , this gives max rubber deflection.

EXTREME4YEARSTOCOME says:

i would get a new one if the window keeps popping out

h w says:

Can you remove a windshield without destroying the rubber seal? I want to
take mine out of my 66 ghia for paint and would like to reuse it. I have
heard to take one out to cut the inside with a razor knife, but of course
that would destroy it.

tuneup350 says:

the only way i ever get the windows out is to sacrifice the rubber, just
slice it with a knife and lift the glass out

valandsergio says:

@valandsergio The brake rotors. I want to change the stock brake rotor and
use a different rotor in order to accomodate the custom rim that I have.

kd5tmu says:

They didn’t use a sledgehammer in the video, it’s a rubber mallet.

stumpydog87 says:

Re: the Volkswagen Australia documentary a rubber mallet was used to help
place the window.

MrSXys WildRide says:

Thanks for this!

Paul Kemp says:

Any chance I can remove and reinstall my ’69 rear defroster window,
replacing only the seal?

TheVideoVolks says:

Awesome work guys, super useful 🙂

bready4u says:

Not sure I agree with your statement in another video that anything pre ’68
is not worth the money in restoring. The later models are being crushed and
cut up all over the shop and everyone is looking after the old models.
Could be a case that there end up being more older models soon! Newer ones
have better visibility with larger windows, collapsable steering columns
etc. I understand what your saying but don’t think it is completely true.
Later models are actually a much better drive.

EXTREME4YEARSTOCOME says:

split window beetles were from 46-52

Chris Vallone says:

Where did you get the seal from? Who made it? Brazil, mexico, CHINA?

skinnyveganboy says:

What I want to know is how to remove the front windshield without it
shattering.

TheIronear says:

I’m searching for how to remove front windows vid. do you got it?

JdNtBrLrTi says:

You make this look SO EASY! I tried the rear window install twice
yesterday, and both times the bottom corners would pop out and not stay.
The window continued to rise in the window opening no matter how much
downward pressure we used. The other thing that kept happening is that as
soon as we started putting pressure on the whole assembly by putting it in,
the chrome strip would start popping out. This job is impossible.

Renier Costa says:

I`m afraid of braking my glass anyways thanks for the video , Cheers from
Brazil

JdNtBrLrTi says:

But these German seals went on the window nicely, and received the chrome
strip with little work. Now I am again attempting to put the back window in
(can’t do windshield now as it is broken) and I’m trying to do it exactly
the way you show in the vid. No matter what the seal WILL NOT pull around
the upper corners of the window opening! This is because as it got pulled
around the bottom the window got pushed up in the window opening and
there’s nothing that can be done about it.
