Hello Gyro,
I am currently trying to fix this same issue on my 1999 VW Passat but was wondering how the catalytic converter was removed as it seems like there is not enough clearance and I would have to remove the engine? At 1:54 in the video it skips the part of physically removing the catalytic converter. My car is currently open so a quick response would be great! Thanks for the video.

Hi Gryo,
Again, wanted to thank you for sharing this. I eventually got the job done by getting a welding service from local auto shop. It costs me only $20. But I have a difficulty to tighten one of four 16 mm nuts located on the top close to engine, which can be seen on the top. Any idea on what kind of a wrench/tool I can use to tighten that nut.

One suggestion on dissembling of two O2 sensors. We can disconnect the wires from top driver side and bottom passenger side.

I have a 2008 Jetta and I think that it might have a similar problem possibly. It is not a turbo (unfortunately) but when I drove it today it was popping, like a backfire noise, whenever I put the clutch in to shift or just whenever the RPM's dropped. It kinda seems like there may be some sort of leak above the cat but I am not quite sure. The car shakes like crazy when it is around 1500-2000 RPM. Do you think it is something similar to this?

Nice job, I just ordered both the Gasket and the exhaust pipe connector Clamp. I'll be doing the same job soon. Thanks for the video!

Very nice job! Unfortunately it occurred to my 2006 passat @ 97K. What is the cost for weld service?
