The 5VZ-FE in the 3rd Generation 4Runner is one of the best Toyota engines ever made that not much is said about.
The beautiful 5VZ-FE is one of the best Toyota engines ever made but it does live under the shadow of it’s previous version which was problematic.
In this video I interrupt a timing belt job on this 1999 Toyota 4Runner to show you this beautiful engine in a very rare manual transmission survivor 4runner.
We also happen to have a 4th generation and a 5th generation 4runner in the shop at the same time and we explore them and make a direct comparison between the old 4runner and the newest one.

Would like to see some Land Cruiser videos, it's the model that put Toyota on the world market. It is the best Toyota ever made.
My ‘99 4Runner has 512,000 and still runs great.
wait. it’s first timing belt????
TY,,,,,,WOW incredible very interesting super kool ,1st class great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA+++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.
I didn't hear how many miles it had. Looks like it hasn't been driven much with the driver seat in that good of condition.
Hello TCCN-
Lived in West 'burbs for years but I've moved to St Paul, MN. I'd gladly take my '07 FJ to you for maintenance but the distance is the issue.
Do you have a FJ savvy mechanic that you can recommend in my area of Minnesota?
Thanks for any help!
The conditions on the ‘99 are superb. I know that the 5th gen is newer but my favorite is the 3rd gen.
I wish Toyota would still offer the manual transmission on the 4runner
Can you check my 2005 Lincoln aviator it has over 400,000 miles and runs perfect should I trade this in and buy the Mercedes that I wanted for my retirement years I’m 65 years old and live in Hollywood Florida
Great example of a solid Toyota powerplant. I think from the 4runnwr/truck platforms the 1gr is probably higher up on the list of reliability. For all time reliable Toyota motors the 5SFE, 3FE, and 1FZFE are the most reliable from my experience. Can't go wrong with a solid Toyota engineered platform.
Reason toyota engine last they are all underpowered.
may i ask a question? i had my Tacoma oil changed today and they recommended that i have the fuel system serviced and they would add a fuel injection cleaner- i only use Shell gasoline in it, would you recommend i do this or what injection cleaner would you recommend this was going to cost over $100.00 any advice would be appreciated, thank you in advance.
As a Toyota junkie, I love this video. My 4Runner is a 2nd gen with that slow 3vz engine but I love it anyhow. Maybe someday I will do the upgrade swap. For now, it runs like a champ. Rustwise it is in great condition, having lived in the North Carolina Piedmont. Light winters, no salt. What I like most about it is that it has a tailgate instead of a hatch. The best upgrade that I have done was to cover the dash with a form-fitted plastic cover. It fit perfectly, looks great, and hid the four or five splits that the hot southern sun put in it.
More info on the 3.0 Toyota rengine please. Does anyone out there know. I was always told it was a good engine.
While the 3rd gen 4runner is amazing, it does have some major issues "from the factory" like weak LBJ's and pink milkshake risk from transmission separating plate inside the radiator melting. Other than that, it's a pretty bulletproof drivetrain. Source: have owned a 3rd gen for 20 years
Does anyone knows the service location, Maybe I can do the service there, I live close to Chicago area, thank you

The 4AFE is the best Toyota engine ever made.
They’re great engines, but gas mileage is terrible.
Americans fail to grasp that in 2025 no fossil fuel or fossil engines are going to be permitted period. Watch the Newsom era begin courtesy of Dominion.
