Do you reckon a 6 tonne press could handle removing and replacing a rear
brake drum bearing?
Should the bearing and axle be able to move inside the backing plate
assembly? Mine are newish, but i cant remember how i put them together and
i recently pulled an axle out to find the bearing and axle move (together)
maybe a centimeter up and down in the backing plate. The retainer and
circlip havent moved, it’s almost as if the bearing diameter is not
factory.
Thanks
Some dimensions for that tool would be handy and also for what model Hilux
it is for??
i thought the bearing was supposed to be pressed by the outer dimension, so
confused as to why this one is being pressed on the inner/?
good job on the repair, engineering the tool and the video, informative and
easy to watch
Very nice of you to post. Good on ya mate. On on! and cheers from Yankee
John
Also mate is that your average 20t press? I’m looking to buy one just want
to make sure it will fit the hilux axle.
Thanks for the video mate. Did you notice that you’ve got the collar on
backwards?? Might make fitting the axle seal rather difficult don’t you
think??
Love your remarks about your “Retarded mechanic”.
Thanks for the video, it was helpful.
Mate you done your way and to me looks much profesional than the jobs
those bastard call mechanics did, my cost up to now in a ford econovan maxi
are greater than the value of the car on the same job ridiculous
Can’t believe they butchered your axel like that – bloody cowboys!
Jobs done! thanks for the tips and my axle had been butchered by some
Monkey with a Gas axe they blew a hole in the axle about 15mm deep. The old
term (Monkeys with spanners etc) is obviously where they got the term
“Monkey Wrench” from. I didn’t need to make the tool but the idea helped!
Cheers Matey!!!
30$ steel + hydraulic press + welding machine + implements.
Very very good! a clever man he is!!!
Good work thx for video
this is an awesome video, thanks so much.
Great vid and perfect bumper music!!
Great Video!!!.
Not exactly ASAP, but search for my video titled “Junk Axle Disassembly”. I
took apart a 7 1/2″ axle from an 86 Toyota Pickup using common hand tools
and a hammer. I got the bearing off without a special service tool. You can
be the judge of how good my technique is.
thanks, can you make video about replacing or rebuilding front and rear
differintial on hilux solid axle…?
Can I get the details on the grinder you are using at 6:31? It looks like a
serious beast!
Thanks – if only you knew how much rambling I cut out ha ha
Thanks man! I was able to get the bolt hole size and spacing (10mm
diameter, 90mm apart) but I’m mostly interested in the size of the hole for
the axle/size & lenth of the square stock so I and build this thing before
tearing my truck apart. Thanks again.
Nice video, but unfortunately, I think you put the retaining ring in
backwards. The taper goes towards the axle seal to make it slip in easily.
Of course, if you get it together without damage to the seal, then no harm
done.
Great work mate! Keep up the videos!!
Yep thanks mate – someone else mentioned this, I need to add an annotation
but haven’t been able to do it properly yet.
The workshop manual shows the flat side going to the bearing inner race. I
like what you have achieved. I am in the process of doing mine at the
moment. I only have a small 6 tonne press so have had to make a few mods to
get the axle out of the bearing due to the length and diameter of the
backing plate. I am a birdshit welder so am not capable of making the tool
as you have. Well done
hello Aussie,im from malaysia,that a very genius,im not mechanic to but i
really enjoy build my on toyota hilux, but never thinking that way to
replace rear bearing, that really helpfull.,Aussie, for rear drum brake can i
replace the drum brake to disc brake??if can what rear disc brake model can
to change it????pliz help me and thank so much fo the video,,,,Awesome
,,keep up the good work.
Nice job mate. Who would have thought a 22 minute video on changing a wheel
bearing could be entertaining… but it was.
Hey mate nice video, Just wondering why you pulled the axle out to check it
in the first place? Did you suspect dodgy work?
Loved everything you did in this vid, only criticism is when(about 16
minutes in) you were hitting the bearing and retaining collar in with a
screwdriver handle on the inner race of the bearing. Don’t do that, use a
pin punch and gently knock the bearing into its final seat on the outer
race of the bearing. That will stop the balls of the bearing feeling any
stress and damaging the grooves they run in
