Dear Toyota and Lexus Owners. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking just because you drive a Toyota that your transmission is just going to last a very long time without anything done to it.
The key of every Toyota and Lexus reliability is understanding the maintenance and performing it according to your driving conditions.
There are many theories and myths about transmission fluid replacement. Is it sealed for life? Should you change it and when? Should you leave it alone?
There are 2 types of Toyota transmission fluids. One is WS and one is Type 4. Each fluid requires a specific replacement interval and if you follow then you won’t have any issues with your automatic transmission fluid for a very long time as they are truly well built.
Hope this helps someone out there not make the mistakes that I see people make all the time.

To answer some of your follow up questions:
1- this is the same recommendations for CVT transmissions except the fluid is different.
2- This does NOT apply to hybrids. Hybrid ECVT transmissions don’t have clutches and a valve body, you can change it at any time. A good interval is between 60k-90k miles.
3- ECVT hybrid transmissions use WS fluid
I will update this list as I go through the comments to answer follow up questions
Thanks for all the great videos. My 2009 Camry with a V6 engine has almost 58,000 km, and the transmission has never been service, is it too late to change the fluid now ? Please advise and thank you in advance.
RedCap=BlackStick.. BlackCap=RedStick.??? KISS
I own three Toyota's, a 2011 Kluger "highlander" auto, 2018 Corolla cvt and a 2018 Hilux 4×2 2.7 manual, all bought brand new. Only my Hilux state's in the Toyota service manual that the manual gearbox oil needs to be replaced, yet none for my auto's. I think this is bogus on Toyota's behalf and should replace the transmission if it craps itself in the "sealed for life" transmission. P.s yes all my Toyota's get serviced on time by Toyota and have never said anything about recommending or changing the transmission fluid. Bad on Toyota's behalf.
What idiot made the bottle cap red for the type that has a black dipstick and black for the type today is for a red dipstick…
@the car care nut Should I risk a first drain and fill @135k if I have a powertrain warranty on a 2013 Sequoia? If it helps in the long run, would it be better to change it now versus having failure when the warranty expires?
I never ever changed transmission fluid on any car whatsoever and they all did just fine.
My transmission in my Toyota Corolla 121nz when put in reverse it takes a few seconds what to do
AMD wishing you and your family a blessed Easter. That video was quite simply the best I have ever seen regarding transmission maintenance and when and when not to change the fluids. Many thanks.
This video came just on time for me thanks AMD
98 Camry 4 cylinder I use Mobil transmission fluid for Asian import cars works Great
Original Trans fluid:

P2714, okay, Clearer the code. I haven't had a problem with in a month now. 250. on the clock. I have a new filter and all the good stuff from Toyota. Now I shouldn't touch it. Tundra 5.7
Should the intervals be adjusted for severe service, such as heavy towing in high temps?
Excellent video,
I've just found out why my IS300 transmission failed.
RIP
I’m taking my chances and doing a drain and fill on all Toyotas I buy regardless of mileage. So far so good, two changes on my Avalon and the torque converter shudder around 30-45 mph is gone and no issues with the Solara. Both vehicles had over 300k when I bought them and maintenance was unknown.
Something else you might want to address for transmissions with a dip stick how the engine needs to be running when you check the level to get a true reading.
Is the colour of the dipstick handle different for different markets? Because my mum's 2010 Corolla has a red handle but the owner's manual states WS. This matches those bottle caps – WS cap is red, so I guess you got them mixed up.
great lighting
So T4 and the old dexron3 is Same at 30k 3 years?
Creeping into 1M subs. Well deserved brother!
I did mine first time at 65,000 miles but it’s was 10 years old. Did I make a mistake?
Awesome video! Except I would disagree about the transmission filter replacement. Not replacing the filter is like doing an engine oil service every 3000 miles and not replacing your oil filter. Sounds silly no?
Great info bro.
My 2011 Toyota Camry V6 has over 260,000 miles on the original fluid and it shifts perfectly fine, even with my aggressive driving. I never changed it because it is a lifetime fluid, and yeah, I know, what is a "lifetime"? Since WS fluid is a synthetic fluid, it doesn't break down like regular fluid, so that's why they don't specify a change interval. Also, in talking about the functions of ATF, you forgot to mention one of its most important characteristics which is that it contains friction modifiers in the additive package that works with the wet clutches to provide the correct controlled slippage during clutch engagement & release; it part of the design.
Is it advisable to change Toyota transmission fluids in U151E U250E U660E while transmission is hot. Have seen transmissions fail while the fluid was drained when transmission was hot. Same with pulling out cv axles. Could you explain more on this
And there's my answer… Thanks a bunch!
Next subject suggestions:
Radiator flush
AC flush
These are two other items the dealer has hit me up on.
Thanks again!
