You would need to remove the door panel, then you should be able to reach
inside to pull the rod or cable to pop the door open. Hope this helps you
out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Abbas Arastu says:

thanks i found this useful… i currently need to replaced the inside door
handle of my camry and will try this method… much appreciated!

David Trocquet says:

Is there a video on the outside handle?

1A Auto Parts says:

You may want to take a look at it again to see if one of the rods that
attach to the handle and unlock the door may have fallen off. It’s pretty
much all mechanical inside that door, it should be fairly easy to see once
the door panel is off if something has become detached. Hope this helps you
out.

Hello! I was able to replace the door handle, but it wont actually open the
door. The part of the rod from the handle to the black plastic casing seems
to be working fine. The issue is deeper in. I can feel inside the door a
half inch verticle slider thing that moves down a little when I pull the
handle, but it dosnt seem to be sliding down far enough to engage the door
release. Any experince with this? Thanks!

@happyjuce Glad we can help.

I used your steps to fix my Avalon’s interior lock. Thanks

nho bawdy says:

do you have this same tutorial for outside door handle? I searched high and
low for a 1996-2001 Exterior Outside Door Handle replacement video but
could not find one thanks

1A Auto Parts says:

We currently do not have an outer door handle repair video for this year
Camry. We’ll keep this request in mind for any future repairs.

ACLTony says:

Outstanding. Only difference on the 99 is that the bolt that normally
requires a 10mm socket has a Phillips Head screw notch in it. So a screw
driver removes it easily. Everything else is the same as on your 98 Camry.

Cameron Sanders says:

Great Video, thanks for posting

RP says:

Great video. But what do you do if the door won’t open?

Kamil Madanat says:

Your video is very helpful and I followed the steps exactly as demonstrated
to install a new handle on the inside of the driver’s door. The issue is
that the door does not open although it still does open from the outside.
The rods looks fine and they seems to move every time I pull the handle but
for some reason the door does not open. Please help!

1A Auto Parts says:

@mojowomyn There could be a few things, what I would do is remove the other
door panel (providing that door is working correctly) investigate how the
correct side works and see if I can identify the problem. A couple things
off the top of my head, could be a metal rod is bent, so it does not
actuate correctly or it could be that the latch needs some grease.

ambsie0 says:

my mechanic installed my new handle, but it’s not unlocking. Where did he
go wrong. He did exactly what you did on the video. What i find very
strange is before he installed the door handle, the broken handle was still
unlocking the door and the new is not, why would that be?

Gary Hawkins says:

On the list of videos to the right there is one that addresses the outside
door handle on Toyota Camry 92-96. If you haven’t fixed it already, hope
this helps.
