ABS Diagnosis Tips from a Toyota Mechanic. Fix It Right The First Time

A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician Shares ABS Diagnosis and repair tips for common ABS problems and how to fix it right the first time!

In this video we’ll take a look at an issue with a 2005 Toyota 4runner with an ABS light on and trouble code C0205.

If you’ve been watching my channel regularly then you’ll know that I am a big advocate of spending 90% of your time on diagnosis. Car repair is not as simple as throwing parts at the problem until it’s fixed.

Throwing parts at a problem with a car is a problem that professionals do and DIY mechanics do as well. Effective diagnosis stems from understanding normal operating conditions first.

In this video I will be focusing on the most common Anti Lock Brakes problem which is issues with Speed sensors. We’ll first take a look at the concern. Then I’ll share with you simple ways you can test speed sensors and verify that it’s indeed is the issue.

Then I’ll share with you the actual cause of the issue in the 4 runner we’re working on which is NOT a speed sensor wire but rather the installation condition of the sensor itself and some corrosion on the wires.

Towards the end of the video I will share with you some practical diagnosis tips that you can’t find in a book but learn through a long career fixing cars every day.

Lai Stephen says:

The speed sensor is cheap why bother to check it?

Mark Heaney says:

I am a retired elevator mechanic and I have had very good luck with DeoxIT D100L contact stablent. I was wondering if it might be a good idea to use it in a connector that has shown signs of corrosion. Also, what do you think about spraying the sensor with penetrating oil before removal? Then painting the sensor area to slow down future rust.

Charlie B says:

Do you think there is any benefit to putting some grease or rust inhibitor on the flat surface after you clean the rust off before installing the sensor?

mckoy lach says:

Thanks for the video. Question beside the topic from this video. For the oil used in my 2012 highlander. It’s called for 0W-20 weigh. Is the quality of the oil from auto part differ from the dealer one or the same quality ? Thanks

Boyd Lamb says:

AMD, I would suspect you are familiar with Eric O's YouTube channel? His shop is in New York State part of the rust belt. I get my Toyota/Lexus fix with your channel and overall car diagnosis/repair from his channel. A great combo one-two punch.

David Jones says:

drj Westfield Wisconsin should you use dielectric grease on the connections?

The_Other _Seto_Kaiba says:

I was waiting for him to lick the rust off of the frame with his tongue and put half chewed bubble gum on it and call it a day.

Marjan Cvetkovic says:

With every new video our community is becoming stronger. I see 180k subscribers. Congratulations!!! Thank you AMD.

Right Lane Hog says:

AMD, I am sure I speak for many other SUBSCRIBERS when I say, with you doing the maintenance, this 4Runner should easily reach 300,000 miles 😉

Melanie Branton D.V.M. says:

you are right up there with RAinman RAy and South main auto…..Oh, yes, I almost forgot, Scotty Kilmer. Love watching these auto vids. Very facinating! Folks just have no idea what goes into labor cost: good tools, elbow grease/skin, your time and know-how, endless list.

Lala Jee says:

10 years ago I had this problem. Mechanic charged me $800.

Big Blue says:

Is there a low cost scan tool to make the computer recognize the aftermarket tire pressure sensors? for RAV 4 2020 & 2019 hybrid.

Creighton Sloan says:

Hello.
Would T-SB-0015-20 apply to my 2021 Camry xse hybrid? Front brakes squeal/ squeak when starting off from a stop or creeping in traffic.
Thanks

Rick T says:

Thanks for the video!
1. Do you recommend using any Dielectric Grease on this electrical contacts/connectors?
2. I assume a light coating (just enough so Not attract dust/dirt) of silicon grease on the sensor O-ring is okay?

Steven says:

How’s the new car coming along? Your community, including me is very excited!

Lexus Man says:

Excellent tips and diagnosis my friend as usual.Well done.

Mitchell Manor says:

2007 Camry Hybrid – Passenger removed seat belt and opened the door before the car was stopped. Then when leaving the car had a warning to check the hybrid system and would not accelerate as normal. I stopped the car and parked and restarted the car a few hours later and the car ran normally and has ran normal sense. Should I have the car hybrid system checked or was that a false warning message.
